Drawing on both scientific and anecdotal sources, the authors of The Joy of Laziness argue that the much-admired Type A lifestyle of intense exercise, frantic activity, and overwork is detrimental to health and long life. Every human being has a limited amount of life energy, they say, and the speed with which it is consumed determines the lifespan. Citing the scientifically recognized Metabolic Theory, the book explains how being “lazy” — being calm, eating temperately, reducing or avoiding sports, exercising moderately, and limiting ambition — can boost the immune system and increase longevity. Included are energy-saving suggestions about eating, working, and exercising; quizzes to determine stress level, life energy, and physical well-being; and valuable tips, charts, and advice on this controversial idea.
My brother gave me this book just for the title. He enjoys poking fun at me for being lazy. While the book obviously doesn't vindicate slothfulness, it does encourage slowing down, and stopping to smell the roses. A high stress life generally only leads to one thing- a short life. In the days when we all have a million things to do and not much time to do them in, we all need to take a little time to slow down and enjoy our lives. Great book!
If you're anything like me, your mind never stops. As anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit knows, its very hard to tell your brain to stop seeing opportunities, and stop "thinking" and just "be". But since we are human "beings" not human "doings" I gave this book a try to see if it could prove me wrong. While I'm not an admirer of "laziness" I think a little reflection is good for anyone. I am really interested in finding productive ways to be lazy and this book really points that out. Doing a puzzle for example can be extremely helpful in sorting out your own thoughts. Thinking through deep problems or ideas while assorting a physical puzzle. Its a sense of accomplishment mentally and physically that can create for more productivity late. Great life-balancer book
I got this book because of the awesome title. As a person who enjoys their down time, it was so awesome to see a book geared toward my way of thinking. This book uses science to prove that fast-paced living can actually harm your health and that being lazy on occasion is actually a much needed stress reliever and improves your overall health. Note that the definition of laziness for this book is not leading a sedentary lifestyle, but one where you take the time to enjoy life and, as the old cliche states, stop to smell the roses. What I found really cool is that this book teaches you how to be "lazy" through quizzes to determine your stress levels, looking at your diet, encouraging stress-relieving exercise, etc. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to slow their life down or learn how to improve your too sedentary life. I know I enjoyed it and learned a lot about myself and how to improve my life.
