Sugar Busters! by H. Leighton Steward

Ever heard of a fat caveman? Today's dieters should follow their ancestors' lead, proclaim the authors of this update to their bestselling original. For hundreds of thousands of years, the human diet consisted of unrefined foods that were high in fiber, low in sugar and low on the glycemic index. Eating similarly now-avoiding white flour, white potatoes, white rice, sugar, soft drinks and highly processed foods in general (the "basic principles" of a diet that's been "field-tested by the human digestive system throughout the eons")-will help people lose weight and keep it off, the authors argue. Their reasoning is sound (high blood sugar triggers the release of insulin, the "fat-storage hormone" and the "CEO of metabolism"; the less the body lives in fat storage mode, the better), and the lifestyle they propose is simple (though it goes beyond just chucking the 5-lb bag of Domino into the trash). Try eating six small meals a day, don't eat after 8 p.m.; read the labels of all breads and cereals to find the hidden sugars and stock your refrigerator with vegetables and lean meats, the authors say. In chapters that are straightforward and focused, the authors consider childhood obesity and diabetes, discuss artificial sweeteners and alcohol, offer recipes from restaurants around the country and answer FAQs from Sugar Busters everywhere. For those with the willpower to cut out the convenience foods, this will be a helpful guide to eating better.

I got this book from the library shortly after it first came out in the 1990's. I followed their direction, eating whole wheat pasta and grilled salmon etc. I lost about 20lbs before I caved in and started eating "normally" again. This plan works. What this book teaches you is informative and useful and true. My problem was sticking to it. I missed my white pasta and I missed my sugar in general. Having to count portions of things and eliminating certain things from my diet completely just did not work for me in the long term. It worked and I did lose weight, but I did not keep off the weight once I started eating normally again. I just ended up bigger than I was before doing the diet, as is typical for diet plans like this. I guess if you are looking for a diet that you can do for the rest of your life, this could be it for you. You just have to be willing to make that change and I was not. I would recommend it only to those that maybe already do not like a lot of sugar in their diet.

For those of us who are not "crazy" and do not have the ability to say no to all types of dairy, this is a diet that really works. I strongly believe in the importance of less sugar in daily diets. High fructose corn syrup is probably the #1 biggest cause for the diabetes and obesity problem in the USA. Especially for children, putting a limit on the sucrose, fructose and glucose can mean a slimmer waistline, a longer healthier life, and more independence and activity into the later years of life. Well done and actually feasible for people like me who can't plan every meal and cannot work out every day. For children its a must, for adults, the sooner you start the better. The biggest benefit is that food actually starts tasting GOOD again when its not so overloaded with sugar.

This diet is for those who need to lower their carb intake, but don't want to or can't stomach the Atkins Diet. If you want to lower your Cholesterol and Triglycerides lowering your sugar intake is a great way to get started.

Written by three doctors, Sugar Busters makes it simple to lower your carbohydrate intake. There are menus and recipes, but the part I like best is you get to have carbs.

With other low carb diets you pine for some form of carb and try to persevere. With Sugar Busters you can have carbohydrates. Sugar Busters just teaches you the right type of carb and how to have it in proportion to the rest of your meal rather than pigging out on the bad stuff.

There is also a correlation between when you eat your meals and your weight loss and Cholesterol levels. If you eat your largest meal of the day at mid-day rather than at night, you should weigh less and have a lower cholesterol level. (I didn’t know it mattered.)

Sugar Busters is a healthy reduced carbohydrate diet that's easy to understand.
