Vegan with a Vengeance : Over 150 Delicious, Cheap, Animal-Free Recipes That Rock by Isa Chandra Moscowitz

In Vegan with a Vengeance, Isa Chandra Moskowitz, host of the community access vegan cooking show The Post Punk Kitchen, brings the do-it-yourself, community-driven ethos of punk rock into the kitchen. Her cooking philosophy embraces being kind to animals (all recipes are completely animal-product free) and your wallet—while being creative and having fun in the process. She emphasizes staying clear of corporate brand-name foods, and says that cooking should be an innovative, experimental, and completely real experience. This one-of-a-kind cookbook offers 125 recipes for all meals of the day, from stuffed mushrooms to tofu pizza, gingerbread cupcakes to pasta with "alfreda sauce," and is full of tips and tricks on how to keep your diet vegan, inexpensive, and liberated.

Half the joy of reading this cookbook is that it manages to take a tone that is a little saucy, a little 'out there', without ever coming across as rude or condescending to people who may not share the author's particular political positions or eating habits. Vegan With a Vengeance is a great alternative to the more traditional 'beans and rice' brand of Vegan cookbooks. Isa offers fun, hip recipes that will make you wonder what you were waiting for, and, if you're nice enough to share with friends, make *them* wonder what they're waiting for. I love that Moskowitz truly starts at the beginning- telling you how to stock your pantry- and works from there, providing delicious, flavourful recipes anyone can appreciate. And she doesn't really stick to one 'type' of cooking, either. For example, my favourite recipes in the collection are the falafel and the orange scones (not together!). A bit on the opposite side of the traditional labeling system, but delicious.

Moskowitz has a website called 'The Post Punk Kitchen' that features some of the recipes in the book. I'd recommend going to check them out- if you like what you see, definitely pick up this book. It's more than worth it.
