In a refreshingly clear-headed and informed approach to addiction, Bill Manville, noted writer and radio host of the popular talk show "Addictions and Answers," has compiled a list of 88 questions and answers from, "a ton of plain and fancy drunks and dopers" and their family and friends. Cool, Hip, and Sober offers valuable advice and information from his guests: noted psychiatrists, psychologists, rehab counselors, MDs, academics and more.
Here, in first-person detail, are responses to the issues faced by alcoholics, addicts, and their loved ones, such as:
* How can I stop for good today?
* How can I tell if someone I love will relapse?
* Alcoholism . . . addiction . . . and sex
* Do interventions really work? And how do I set up one?
* How do I find the best rehab for me?
*The many faces of denial
* Is alcoholism inherited?
* And much, much more . . .
A brave, transformational look at the treatment of chemical dependency, Cool, Hip & Sober is a captivating, insightful and essential handbook for overcoming denial and achieving a peaceful, long-term recovery.
This book changed my life in a way you can just imagine. I was a normal gay how used to smoke marijuana, I did n´t smoke a lot but I could smoke three a month, My girlfriend gift it to me, so I decided read the book. When I finished the book I discover I was hooked by drugs and I begin my battle against drugs. Finally three month ago I win the battle and I am completely free of drugs. I give my most sincere thanks to this book.
Picture this: I'm in the Virgin mega store in New York's union square, I'm browsing the books section, and I see this book on the shelf. I circle around the row it sits in for a few minutes because I am too embarrassed to be seen reading it. Seriously, "Cool, hip and sober?"
Four years later, this book is still on my personal bookshelf.
Before I got myself into a recovery program, I had so many questions. "Do I have a problem?" "What is a 12 step program going to do for me?" "Is everybody there crazy?" "No really, do I have a problem? Aren't people going to think I'm too young/not skid-row enough/crazy?"
In a no-nonsense, direct way, Manville serves up answers to every question I had, and 80+ other questions. He provides quotes from experts and friends alike, shares insightful stories from his personal experience, but most helpful of all, shatters misconceptions about 12-step groups and helps anyone teetering on the do-I-or-don't-I-have-a-problem edge to get over it, try a meeting, and seek help.
I cannot recommend this book enough. I would, however, like to suggest to Bill Manville that he change the title. Even among my sober friends, this book's title still gets some comments :).
