Get serious about your strength training at home with the Bowflex Ultimate XTLU home gym, which includes everything you need to keep fit and build up muscles in your own home. It comes standard with 310 pounds of real Power Rod resistance (which can be upgraded to 410 pounds with optional additional Power Rods). The Ultimate includes a lat tower with an angled bar to help you build back and shoulder muscles, a low pulley/squat station for building glutes, hamstrings, and quads, and a leg extension/curl station for developing muscular legs. The adjustable pulley system is designed to change your angle of resistance to help increase the effectiveness of many upper body exercises. It also offers a smooth, built-in rowing machine. When you're done with the workout, the Ultimate folds down and can be rolled away via its integrated wheels.
The Ultimate utilizes Bowflex's patented Power Rods, which provide resistance, or weight, that feels as good as or better than free weights--but without the inertia or risk of joint pain usually associated with free weights. You can hook one, two, three, four or all of your Power Rod units to the cable pulley system and go from as little as 5 pounds all the way up to 310 pounds of resistance. The Rods are precisely manufactured from a high-tech composite material under the highest quality control measures, then sheathed and tested 4 separate times to ensure quality and durability. The Power Rod units are so strong, you can flex them repeatedly but you won't be able to wear them out. In fact, they're so strong, Bowflex backs them with its No-Time-Limit Warranty free replacement offer.
I bought this used after using something similar in a gym and liked the way it didn't require the use of a spotter and how easy it was to change weights and exercises.
I am overall fairly pleased with it, although there are some exercises that just don't translate well onto the machine. It is possible to do things like squats with the Bowflex, but it doesn't have nearly the same feel as using a barbell with weights. But on other exercises it actually feels better than free weights or machines, like flyes.
Another good feature of the Bowflex is that it's quiet - no weights slamming to the ground. That helps me get in a morning workout before starting the day without waking up the whole house.
I recommend this as a compliment to anyone's exercise routine if they have an odd schedule, don't have a gym membership, or exercise alone and don't have access to a spotter.
This is a fabulous home gym for people who are really serious about working out. It is a large peice of equipment and very pricey, but has everything you need.
My dad recently bought the machine used, because he wanted a piece of equipment around the house to exercise with. The idea seemed good in theory, but for us we found it difficult to make ourselves exercise at home, being that we are all members of a gym nearby. After about a month I noticed all we did was hang clothes on it! Also, being used to gym-style equipment, I couldn't get used to the cable-style of resistance. It felt as if the weight was hard to pull, yet easy but uncomfortable. Very awkward. My dad and I just ended up just attending our local gym again. Not my style of equipment.
I purchased my Bowflex more than twelve years ago (yes, they still sell the same machine!) and have used it heavily during that entire time. When I bought the machine I added another 200 lbs (two additional sets of power rods) for leg exercises. The increased weight has allowed me to easily do resistance training with heavy weight (resistance) at my convenience and without the need for spotters. That's been a great benefit for me since I work very long, irregular hours. Another huge benefit of this machine is how it has been adaptable to my needs over that time: At first I was doing 'heavy' workouts - then about 2 years ago I had a total hip replacement and the machine became a central element for my physical therapy! After all this time the machine is still in great shape and gets used 4 times per week. This is a great product.
