This book has a lot of helpful information. It not only explains what borderline personality disorder (BPD) is (and is not), it also gives practical ideas about what to do to get along better with someone who has it. The most important thing to me was that it helped me realize what I could control and what I had to expect the other person to be responsible for doing. It's not a quick change book, more of a lifestyle that you have to commit to following. It helps if the person with BPD is on board, too, but that's not necessary for this book to be helpful. I wish it had more examples of what to do once you've put these ideas into place--maybe there will be a volume 2 some day.

My mom bought this book originally, because I used to have problems with cutting. After reading it to gain a better understanding of who her daughter had become and how to deal with it (hopefully without going insane and having to commit herself!) she silently left it on my desk. After going through the usual, "Oh whatever, I'm fine" I picked it up and read it. It's really interesting to recognize so many of your key behaviors in a book. I know this book was written for the people who have to live with you, or interact with you, but to read it yourself is actually quite helpful. It can help you recognize some key behaviors, and help yourself try to recognize them before they stop, and hopefully turn them into something more positive. Good Luck!
