I Hate You, Don't Leave Me: Understanding the Borderline Personality by Jerold J. Kreisman

People with Borderline Personality Disorder experience such violent and frightening mood swings that they often fear for their sanity. They can be euphoric one moment, despairing and depressed the next. There are an estimated 10 million sufferers of BPD living in America today -- each displaying remarkably similar symptoms:

* a shaky sense of identity
* sudden violent outbursts
* oversensitivity to real or imagined rejection
* brief, turbulent love affairs
* frequent periods of intense depression
* eating disorders, drug abuse, and other
self-destructive tendencies
* an irrational fear of abandonment and an
inability to be alone

For years BPD was difficult to describe, diagnose, and treat. But now, for the first time, Dr. Jerold J. Kreisman and health writer Hal Straus offer much-needed professional advice, helping victims and their families to understand and cope with this troubling,shockingly widespread affliction.

Having a friend or family member who is Bipolar is very trying at times. I bought this book for a friend and read it to ensure it had information that would be useful to her and beneficial, however I was very disappointed with it. It gives the basic information they have probably heard time and time again rather than new information. Additionally it causes the reader to become hopeless and frustration. No good suggestions for coping with being Bipolar is found in the book.

My friend and I didn't like the tone of the book however you may so this is one book that is truly each to his own. It may just be what you need but didn't work for my friend.

This book is great- if you don't actually suffer from BPD (borderline personality disorder). Unfortunately, it does go into a lot of detail about BPD, but it's extremely outdated. It gives you no hope with the wonderful new medications and treatments available. If you actually suffer from BPD (as I do) the book can be extremely depressing, leading you to think you're just kind of "stuck with it" and that there's not really help available. My mother, on the other hand, loved the book. I think it's easier for someone trying to just understand BPD, than someone trying to live with it. It does give a great deal of info about borderline personality disorder, and there's several places where you go "wow, that is SO me." (Well, even the title reminds me of me at times!) I'd recommend it- if you DON'T suffer. I think if you do though, you'd be better off with a newer, updated book.
