Sink Reflections by Marla Cilley

In her debut book, Cilley, a.k.a. "The FlyLady" to the thousands who log onto her FlyLady.net Web site, reaches into the everywoman's home to help make her housecleaning more fun and her life more organized. Beginning with "Shiny Sink 101," Cilley explains how a spotless kitchen sink can direct even the most discouraged housekeeper onto the path of well-ordered domesticity. Through several straightforward routines, including the 27 Fling Boogie (the cut-throat practice of quick junk disposal), the Five-Minute Room Rescue ("another step on the road to clutter recovery") and the Hot Spot Fire Drill (for an area that, like a forest fire, takes over your home), Cilley advises her "FlyBabies" on how to overcome clutter and CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome). Filled with testimonials from online followers, the book aims to help readers establish manageable daily and weekly habits by incorporating spirituality and family into the program. Detailed and direct, this is a guidebook for the stay-at-home or working woman who wants to have it all, including her sanity.

Marla's book is a great way to slowly establish routines that will make your life simpler, more organized and happier. This book is wonderful for helping to organize and structure your home and daily life. It would be a great gift for newlyweds or new parents, as well as young people starting out on their own. It also would be a great gift for someone of any age who may be struggling with home organization and cleaning. I highly recommend this book.

I am addicted to the flylady.com website, so it was natural to go out and buy the book too! It's great, with a wonderful sense of humor you rarely find in the organization field. Most books are boring, and seem to punish you for not being as clean and organized as it's writer. This is a realistic, down to earth book that's funny and extremely helpful! For the first time since I moved out on my own, I'm not ashamed to have people over, because I finally got stuff put away!

I first "met" Flylady Marla Cilley online, on her website, when she was starting out in the organizing world and I was starting out in my marriage. I'd grown up in a perpetually disorganized house, and my apartments as a single girl were easy to keep up as I was never home. Now though, I was going to be homekeeping for the first time, for more than just myself, and I was in over my head.

The Flylady system is easy to follow, simple, and doesn't require you to spend a fortune on organizing "gear" like some systems do. Grab a timer, even just use the one on your oven, and you're ready to go. Lessons about housekeeping are broken down into easy chunks, including how to create a manual that will help both you and anyone else keep your house up should you be unable to at some point (hospitalization, etc).

There are times when Marla is just too perky and happy for me, and I want to bury my head under my pillow and ignore my un-shiny sink and cluttered rooms, but her down-home style is friendly and approachable more often than not. The book reads like a friend chatting with you, and is meant to be read in small doses, so even if you only have a few minutes a day, you can still slowly implement her system of babysteps to a clutter free, clean home.
