This project started in 1997 when I learned that the only world guide to vegetarian restaurants and vegan restaurants on the internet at that time (now defunct) was no longer being updated. However, I put the idea of HappyCow on hold until November 1999 while I was living in India.
I wasn't sure at the time exactly how a project like this could be managed, but there was some inspiration, and I felt compelled to take it on. I am a world traveler and have lived, worked, and traveled to over 50 countries in the past 22 years. I have been a vegetarian for about that long and have often found it difficult to find good places to eat and stay healthy while traveling.
In the recent years, HappyCow has benefited from donated time contributed by Diana, a 10+ year vegetarian. Now a husband and wife team, along with friends and volunteers, we have a lot of ideas for the future of the site and its development. Most of the ideas require more technical programming and funding, so they are slow in being implemented. Although HappyCow is a free site and non profit in nature but not 501-c status, our manpower and resources are at time limited... your patience is appreicated.
Nonetheless, we continue to be passionate about this project and are very pleased with our New Design (layout and background, evolving cow logo, easy-to-use menu), and with the additions of the HappyCow Members Community, Interactive Maps for most countries, address/zip code searches for restaurants and health food stores, and the capability for visitors to submit reviews for individual listings and photos to accompany the listings!
Additionally, we are focused on updating the all the listings by making their information as up-to-date and accurate as possible. We are also expanding HappyCow to include more community building features, and useful health-related information with an expanding vegetarian recipes collection in progress.
Each day, we are inspired and encouraged to know that HappyCow is the internet's most widely used and longest operating worldwide vegetarian restaurant guide. We deeply appreciate the flow of positive responses we receive from folks everywhere like you!
While I'm not a vegetarian, I have a lot of friends who are. Since most of my friends are also from out of town, when they come visit, I have no idea where to take them for vegetarian friendly meals! (You can only suggest meatless tacos at taco bell so many times before they get upset with you) This website is an awesome resource, so I know where to take them if they come visit, and if we go on a trip together, we know where to stop!
A friend of mine who is also a vegetarian told me about this site. I immediately loved the name (I love cows!) and had to check it out. I am always looking for new places to shop for whole foods and new restaurants to eat at that cater to or at least acknowledge the existence of vegetarian customers. This site lets you search by where you live to find the stores and restaurants, so its really easy to use. And its not just a guide either. They also have blogs, groups, and forums you can participate in. This is cool, as you can look for people who share your interests or even reviews of places you are wanting to check out. They also have links for shopping and recipes (I have tried the recipe for Mushroom Gravy and its divine!). I would recommend this site for any vegetarian/vegan person. I would also recommend this site for any meat-eater who is at a loss for how to feed/entertain a vegetarian/vegan friend or relative. Lots of information here and really easy to navigate.
Okay, I've just got to get this out of the way first:
I LOVE YOU, HAPPY COW!
Good? Good.
Happy Cow is a fairly comprehensive website covering many areas of concern to vegetarians and vegans - there are bits of the site devoted to animal rights issues, recipes, health & supplement information, and of course the always-helpful 'community' boards. Pretty standard stuff. But where Happy Cow goes absolutely above and beyond the call of any vegetarian/vegan website is in its thorough, well researched database of veg restaurants worldwide. Seriously, these guys are lifesavers. Whenever I move, or even go on holiday, I first do a quick search in their map to see if there are any restaurants I know will be veg friendly- whether for the occasional meal while traveling, or to make a favourite 'old-steady' in a new neighborhood.
The reviews for the restaurants are marvelous- you get a description of the restaurant, how much they cost, what sort of dietary restrictions they cater to, as well as opinions on whether they're worth visition.
A great resource. Highly recommended.
