Psychcentral.com by psychcentral.com

Psych Central is the Internet's largest and oldest independent mental health social network created and run by mental health professionals to guarantee reliable, trusted information and support communities to consumers, for over 13 years. We are today's modern voice for mental health information and advocacy and have the broadest online reach and recognition of any mental health network online today, touching the lives of over 800,000 people every month.

Psych Central has its roots in indexing online support groups, starting in the summer of 1991. Launched in January 1995 as Psych Central: John Grohol's Mental Health Page, our website was an instant hit from the beginning with its directory of online mental health resources and the first lists of symptoms for mental disorders published online. Within the first 3 months, it received Point's prestigious Top 5% of the Web award, as well as a fair amount of media attention in the ensuing years. We are consistently rated as one of the top mental health resources online today.

Mental health has always been something that raises my curiosity. Being manic bipolar, myself, I was curious as to what causes different problems in mental health. This site doesn't only tell you where it starts or what could possibly trigger it, but it also informs you on how to treat it or how to deal with someone dealing with it. It's very informal. As a matter of fact, I've never seen a site this informal on mental health like this before. It's amazing. I'd recommend this to anyone, that was to study different mental health problems. Especially if they think there's a possibility they could be suffering from something like me. It'll help them better learn what steps to take to deal with it and help them cope.

This website is an amazingly comprehensive index of different psychiatric disorders. There's a ton of information available, from symptoms, medications, and things you can do to obtain the help you need! As someone who suffers from bipolar, I know that the treatments change all the time, and it's nice to be able to keep up with new treatments that are available. There's also some self tests for symptoms of disorders, but I'm always wary of those, self diagnosis is a dangerous game!

Psych Central is pretty much the only resource you'll ever need for anything related to psychological health and information. The site covers everything, from depression and anxiety, to schizophrenia and sexual disorders. If there an issue, you can find it here. I love the layout, which is very nice and modern, without being trendy and distracting. I think that's an important aspect of any good website.

First, there a huge reference to the many psychological conditions and disorders, with a comprehensive list of symptoms and treatments for each. This section is huge and leaves nothing out. What I found to be one of the most valuable aspects of the site are the test. Only a doctor can diagnose you, of course, but these tests can give you an idea if you might be dealing with a certain condition or disorder. For instance, I took the Adult ADHD test and found out that it's likely I have this. Now, this is something I can bring up with my doctor.

There's also a community, so you can chat and get help from others. A great resource!

Psychcentral is to psychology for the every day web surfer what webmd is to standard medicine. While it will never replace going to a 'real' doctor, it is an excellent resource if you need to do some background reading, or if you're just curious about the course or treatment of some mental illness. Everything is fairly simple, made easy to understand- accessible for the armchair psychiatrist in us all. Curious whether you're exhibiting symptoms of depression? Or do you just want to know what your 'true personality' is? A quiz section has selections that range from helpful - Depression/Bipolar/ADD screening tests, for example- to the fanciful.

But it's not all fun and games. There's a wealth of information here- neatly divided and organized. Do you suspect your spouse is suffering from depression? Learn the signs, when to worry, and how to help? Have you been diagnosed with a disorder yourself, but you're worried about the prescribed drugs or potential interactions? There's a whole section devoted solely to prescription solutions to mental issues. A community of readers is there to help support or discuss any issue you might care to mention, which is always a plus. Should you not be able to find what you need though, a very thorough links section also exists.

Fantastic resource.

While this site is packed with information, it is geared toward laymen, rather than psychology professionals. It has a great set of links, which would be very helpful to anyone trying to do some research on a psychology related condition. The website has a nice selection of quizzes ranging from useful screening tools, to the just for fun. The Community area contains many discussions concerning drugs used in the treatment of psychological issues. I believe this is an excellent site feature, considering the problems many people are having with some of the drugs, which have recently been “fast-tracked” by the FDA. When diagnosed with a psychological condition, many are confused about what the meaning of the diagnosis really is. The “Disorders” section, makes understanding of DSM diagnoses far easier for the average person. Make sure to check out the blogs on this site, there are a great many interesting submissions here. If you, a family member or friend, has been diagnosed with a psychological condition, or there is reason to suspect a problem, this site could be a real help.
