Why the Flex Plan?
There’s no need to give up your favorite foods while losing weight. On the Flex Plan, our updated version of the popular POINTS® Food System, you can eat any food you want. Just stay within your personalized daily POINTS® Target and you’ll be making healthier, better food choices in no time.
How the POINTS system works
Every food has a POINTS value, which is calculated based on a food’s calories, fat and fiber. POINTS values help you keep track of what you eat, so that you stay within a daily POINTS Target that’s personalized for you, based on your height, weight and other factors, such as gender.
Along with your daily POINTS Target, you also get a “Weekly Allowance” to use for a special occasion like a night on the town--so you can still indulge sometimes, without going off track.
The Weight Watchers Flex Plan assigns a points value to every food. These points are related to the calories, fat, and fiber in each food item. With the Flex Plan, you are given a budget of points you can have each day but then it is up to you to pick the foods that you eat. If you want to indulge in a certain high-points food, you will just have to restrict during other meals. I like that Weight Watchers doesn't completely restrict you from the things you love, so it's easy to stick with this diet. The plan comes with a book that lists the points values for all sorts of food, even for supermarket brands and restaurant meals. Also, unlike meal services, you aren't required to eat Weight Watchers food, so this plan is more wallet friendly This was actually the first diet I ever went on and I was able to lose 10 pounds. However, the Weight Watchers service does get a little bit expensive so eventually I moved off the plan and started to work independently. Weight Watchers can be a good segue into learning life-long healthy habits and introduces you to the concept of watching calories and what you eat without changing your life.
When I joined Weight Watchers to lose a large amount of weight, I chose the Flex Plan as my "plan of action" so to speak. I liked that it allowed you to eat whatever you want, within reason, by counting "points". I think it's a genius way of keeping up with what you eat, but for some reason I got bored with this plan and ended up gaining back the 12lbs. I lost.
I think, honestly, the reason I didn't keep going with this is that I had too much weight to lose. This is great for people that want to lose 50lbs or less (that's my opinion, anyway). I had to lose 200, and I was impatient! "Diets" like this that made me pay a weekly fee to utilize the service just got old, fast. Plus, the foods that Weight Watchers sells in major stores? That stuff is GOOD, but oh-so expensive! Seriously, I was going broke. It was, truly, one of the better diets I ever went on, and I did learn a few things from the Flex plan. I eat healthy, but every now and then I eat the "bad" stuff I want, simply in moderation.
My mother in law started using the Weight Watchers Flex Plan so I thought I'd give it a try. I figured I'd give up after a couple days because I'd be hungry, but I was surprised to see that I didn't feel that way. The Flex Plan doesn't tell you that you can or can't eat any specific food. It teaches you to make healthy eating decisions while still having the flexibility to have a piece of cake every once in a while! I've lost 12 pounds so far on this plan and I'm excited to keep going with it. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who's interested in learning more about health and nutrition and maybe lose a few pounds in the process.
This is such a great program. The key is making the commitment to becoming healthy in all areas of your life. If you just get into it to lose weight and then go back to your "old" ways, you will not have long-term success. However, if you have had it with your "old" ways and want to make a break-through, this is a 100% healthy & balanced way to look at eating and food. You will have to figure out how to stop eating before you get too full and you will have to commit to eating at least 5 servings of fruit and veggies daily. But if you do, you will reap the rewards for a lifetime!
I love all the weight watchers books. I am a stickler for healthy food and different ways to prepare it. I love the weight watchers plans because it allows you some flexibility in what you eat. It says, "okay, you want ice cream today, have ice cream, but make good choices regarding your food for the rest of the day." I love the idea because it does not seem like a "diet", which makes somebody bound to fail. Rather, it is a lifestyle change which encourages healthier alternatives. After so long of making good food choices, something changes. It allows weight watchers to become a way of life.
