Good Grief: A Constructive Approach to the Problem of Loss by Granger E. Westberg

Many people experience grief as the result of loss. This book describes what happens to us whenever we lose someone or something important. We all need a better understanding of the small griefs in life as well as those larger grief experiences that can overwhelm us. Here is a volume to be kept close at hand. It can be used over the years as you encounter a wide variety of grief experiences or as you assist friends in moving beyond grief to good grief.

I read this book not to long ago when the father of my 3 daughters was murdered, besides being killed in a horrible way I knew two of the people who were involved in his killing. Because of this I was extremely angry, I was angry with the people and I was angry with the father of my children for not changing his life style which is part to blame for his death. After his passing I had a what seemed to be a million different feelings, hurt, anger and so much more. Besides dealing with me I was having to cope with 3 young girls dealing with hurt and anger as well. During the reading of this book I was somewhat able to deal with my feelings in, I guess you can say a more positive manner. I was also able to help my daughters, being I was able to talk to them about feelings in a way I would not have known how if I hadn't been reading this book. If you or someone you know are going through the process of griefing I would really recommend this book, it really does help.

When my uncle recently passed away, a friend gave me this book. It is not very long, yet it really helped me understand what stages of the grieving process I had already gone through and what I could expect on the long road ahead. It was also helpful as I could better relate to what my aunt was going through. It helped me better understand how grief was affecting her (everyone grieves differently).

Anyone who has suddenly lost someone close to them knows that the shock and utter despair is almost unbearable. You certainly do not have the strength or frame of mind to read a long, confusing, psychological analysis of the grieving process. That's why I really liked this book. It is short, easy to understand, yet helps to put everything in perspective during a time when your brain is muddled and nothing seems clear. I think this is a very thoughtful gift for those who are grieving and I would definitely recommend it.
