Two of North America’s foremost vegetarian dietitians present up-to-date findings on the benefits of a vegan diet—eating without meat, eggs, or dairy products. Includes information on how a vegan lifestyle protects against chronic disease; what the best sources for protein and calcium really are; why good fats are vital to your health; balanced diets for infants, children and seniors; pregnancy and breast-feeding tips for moms; tips for teens turning vegan; considerations for maintaining and reaching a healthy weight; and achieving peak performance as a vegan athlete. A vegan food guide outlines a daily plan for healthy eating. Sample menus help remove all the guess work.. Also included are the benefits a plant-based diet has on the environment and human hunger. This is one of the most comprehensive books on vegan nutrition on the market.
Vegetarian, that’s what I was trying to be. But my family members told me that you don’t need to leave non-vegan, this will make you fit. I don’t want to be fit or unfit, only one thing I want to be a pure vegetarian. Whenever I tried to make them convinced about being a vegetarian, they refused.
At last I found this book in my uncles library, I studied this book carefully after that I have shown this book to all my family members, now three, instead of five members of my family already became vegan. Remaining are on the way...
This book describes us that several diseases were caused when we have non-vegan.
The topics like pregnancy and breast-feeding are very helpful for women.
The perfect sources of proteins, calcium is described carefully.
This book is very useful for those who want to be vegan.
I've known for a long time that I wanted to be vegan. But the practicalities of it made it difficult at times. Becoming Vegan has been a very helpful resource for me and my family.
Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina are registered dietitians, which has made this book a great deal more "credible" in the eyes of my own family and friends. For those who believe vegans sacrifice their health for their ethics, this gives a thoughtful and reasoned argument why we can be very healthy and vegan, too.
After a few years as a vegetarian and now almost 2 years vegan, I was still having some challenges in dealing with a world that is predominately not vegan. This book helped me with that as well.
I'm now passing this on to my daughter, who I hope will benefit from the section on vegan breastfeeding moms.
This book was wonderful for me. I read a book called "Skinny Bitch" which basically made me feel like I'd rather become vegan or die. As a result the struggle to conform to the guidelines of being a vegan dictated my life. The restrictions are very intense and there are many but very worth it. Becoming a vegan can be very intimidating, becoming a vegetarian is hard enough let alone renouncing milk products and buttery goodness as well. This book provides information on what becoming a vegan means, what vegans eat and believe and ways to prepare easy, practical vegan meals, including many recipes and tips for a vegan novice like me. This book also provides products that are vegan friendly and sometimes also suggests places where consumers can find these products. I am now a well-educated vegan and I owe most of my initial information and daily meals to this book filled with support and education for the aspiring vegan.
I highly recommend this book to anyone considering a vegan (or even vegetarian) diet. Unlike many similar works, this book doesn't depend on scare tactics or rampant evangelism to convince you to give up eating animal products. Instead, it focusses on the practicalities- it explains the nutrients your body will need, and how to get them.
Everything's covered- from B12 to calcium to fatty acids to good protein sources. In addition, the authors take into consideration that 'all vegans are not created equal', giving space to people at all stages of life, from infancy to seniority, and to those living a very active, athletic lifestyle.
A fantastic resource- anyone considering changing their diet should give it a read.
