In a culture seemingly obsessed with age and beauty, we are bombarded with the pressures of looking younger, turning back the clock via cosmetic surgery, and extending our lifespan with a bizarre array of supplements. Even before Ponce de Leon went searching for the Fountain of Youth, we have dreamed of living long lives in the healthy, energetic bodies of our youth.
Recent progress in genetic manipulations and laboratory experiments raise the probability that science will one day enable our control over biological aging. But while Botox and Human Growth Hormone injections are becoming routine to a host of aging baby-boomers; other cultures around the world accept and revere aging as part of the life-cycle.
