You know you are working too damn hard when:
* You always feel like you're behind, running a little late.
* You are irritable, critical, or short-tempered.
* You see less and less of your friends and family.
* You get more headaches and stomachaches.
* You have a tough time relaxing.
* You feel guilty when you aren't working.
* It's all work and no play.
* You're married to your job.
* You tire easily.
* You have trouble falling asleep.
* You sometimes feel depressed or sad without any apparent reason.
* You need to be continually busy.
* You're not having much fun.
Working too damn hard isn't necessary, its about working smart by making the most of your time and getting the most out of your life.
Your post got me thinking of an interesting take on the word, "luck." Most would agree that luck is what happens when preparation and opportunity meet. Here's another spin on it, "L.U.C.K. or labor under correct knowledge." I think that when you're "working smart," you won't be "working hard." Hard work is drudge work. I think it's a fallacy for people to think that work must be something painful, unpleasant, and laborious. Instead of telling my student to "work hard or study hard," I tell them to work smart, to challenge themselves, and to seek new and innovative problem-solving techniques. When we begin to change our vocabulary on such a simple level then we'll find ourselves free of all the symptoms of working too darn hard! It's the little habits that we fall into when we're young that shape the course of our lives and relationships.
