I know it's tedious but I remain steadfast in my belief that if you fail to plan, fugetaboutit. A bplan is more than 30 pages of rhetoric and dreams. It's a companion that gives you confidence in your decisions b/c it's backed up by good old fashioned numbers and well-thought out assumptions. Let's go slow. Start with an executive summary. It's 2 pages and it'll give you the push you need to get the full plan done.
Here's a snapshot of what to put in it - biz overview, mission, success factors, market analysis, competition, ownership snapshot, startup expenses and financial projections.
Doing an executive summary will make you think about your business in a much more specific way. It's fun to dream. It's fun to be a visionary but success comes down to execution of tactics as well as big picture thinking. So, committing your plan to paper makes it real. It gives you a guide to help navigate the sometimes crazy waters of entrepreneurship.
Stay flexible. Revisit your business plan often. Make notes about what's happening in your industry. Network like your life depends on it. But most of all, live passionately, take risks and have fun!

I'm writing a book with a partner and lately, we see a brand developing. Do you think a business plan is applicable in the same way? My instincts say yes, but I always thought a business plan was most appropriate for those with a business and not for those in a more creative field.
At the first board meeting for my last company I was asked for our business plan by our investor. I said, you have it, you just invested X million dollars based on it. He said he never got it. For 15 minutes we argued and I was truly baffled. When we stopped and listened for a second we realized what he meant by the business plan was the financial model that ultimately was the underlying principles and assumptions to the business. For managing your business - the business plan (cash flow in particular) is the most important tool you have. Write a business plan with numbers for the purpose of running your business (not for partners, or friends or investors) - it does pay off.
