Can you measure happiness? Apparently the Gallup polling organization thinks so.
Today the Gallup-Healthways Well Being Index was introduced to provide a measure of American Happiness. According to this survey of more than 100,000 people, 49% of Americans consider themselves content with their lives right now and where they will be in five years.
It's not all sunshine. The survey reveals some troubling aspects about the condition of our workforce, health care, and contemporary lifestyles. For instance, 2/3 of workers report a chronic illness, injury or medical condition. 2/3 report that they are overweight or obese. Unsurprisingly, those with higher incomes report being happier.
Just goes to show that many people are comfortable in their all too familiar dysfunction.
I'm in the middle of reading a book that emphasizes how "easy" it is to become happy, and specifically dispels the notion that money has anything to do with it. Interesting book that challenges some conventional ways of thinking. So far, its also written in an entertaining style so an enjoyable read. 4 Hour Work Week.
