Saving...
Recommend this? YES NO

In 2006 I went through my annual financial seminar. There was one exercise that that I found particularly interesting for two reasons:
1. What came out of my mouth
2. What I heard from others

The exercise goes like this...

*The primer*
True wealth is obtained by not only having a successful strategy, but by experiencing an ongoing psychology of prosperity and abundance. And to create a psychology of wealth, we must understand the barriers that prevent us from taking advantage of the opportunities before us. The primary barrier anyone faces, (including me) is our beliefs about money.

What belief system have you developed consciously or unconsciously about money?

Then a partner asks you these questions over and over and over while you answer rapid fire with your unconscious mind. EG as fast as whatever pops into your mind. Thinking/pausing/justifying interrupts the raw nature of your responses and inhibits the process. Here are my responses word for word from the seminar...

*What is money?*
-Possibility, opportunity, legacy, service, differentiation, connection, contribution , tithing, catalyst, innovation, joy, vehicle, transaction, tool, door opening, a reflection of its owner, power, providing, enabling, part of my vision and plan

*What is not having money?*
- Painful, difficult, stressful, challenging, elusive, moving, fleeting, emotionally draining, anxiety, disappointing, judgmental, struggle, limiting, part of my past, irresponsible, disconnected, family fights, separation, frustration, scarcity, controlling, arguments

*What is having money?*
-Opportunity, possibility, abundance, privilege, leadership, awareness, community, state, easier, natural, creation, open doors, a tool, legacy, gifting, building, global catalyst, responsibility, worldwide problem solver, toys, fun, magical, spontaneous, lifestyle, generous, giving, ticket to the world, anything is possible, magnifier, unbelievable, fairy tale, influence, contribution, a mirror/reflection to see how I show up

*Who am I financially?*
-On the money, progressive, willing to try things, an investor, a businessman, an innovator, an entrepreneur, unafraid to take chances, a believer in long-term wealth, a student, informed, learning, growing, falling and getting back up, sharing, teaching, appreciation, giving, contribution, legacy, recognition of how damn fortunate I really am—GRATEFUL!

Because I was blown away by how much comes 'up' and out when I and everyone else in the seminar did this exercise. Beliefs are the foundation. When would NOW be a good time to figure out your beliefs around money? Do it with a friend, family member or group to up the ante and have some fun while learning! Then discuss your answers and find out how deeply financial beliefs run...
