The Weekly Jam: Wake-Up Call! US Recession in Full Effect

According to a recent Reuter’s article, Venice’s legendary Harry’s Bar, where Ernest Hemingway once held court, is offering a 20% discount to American tourists. Italy. I-t-a-l-y, where only 10 years ago I had to buy an extra suitcase to cart home leather, cashmere and silk goods because the exchange rate was so favorable is now taking pity on American visitors. What happened? The rise of the Euro and the madness of King George- that’s what happened.

It’s hard to deny we’re in a recession when there’s a sign outside Harry’s reading: “Harry's Bar of Venice, in an effort to make the American victims of subprime loans happier, has decided to give them a special 20 percent discount on all items of the menu during the short term of their recovery.” *Discount does not apply to alcohol.

Four years ago, a Campari and soda cost 10 Euros (approximately 12 USD). At the present exchange rate, it’s nearly double and, as previously noted, Harry’s discount doesn’t include booze. Ouch.

While we are in a recession, we don’t have to be “victims.” PeopleJam featured bloggers and experts offer suggestions on how to save money, invest and have fun- even in tough times.
