I have 3 sons. The oldest and youngest are very gifted in ways that the world celebrates.
My middle son, Tom, has Asperberger's syndrom- which means that he is very smart academically but very delayed and anxious in social settings. He's the oddball loner who doesn't make friends well or seem to fit in with the crowd.
Tom is my hero. Every day I see him at the bus stop, heading into a stressful day in a high school of 2,300 kids who don't like him very much or don't know who he is.
He bravely starts out each day, unsure why he doesn't have the popularity of his siblings, but determined to keep on being himself. One of his gifts is a total lack of self consciousness.
Today, look around you for the unsung heros in your life. The people who have some challenges but keep on facing life with determination and grit.
I'm thankful for all of my sons. However, Tom is my inspiration. He never gives up or beats himself up because of what he assumes others think about him.
Can you find an unsung hero this week and celebrate him/her?
If so, you'll never forget their story.
Love and blessings,
Lynne
Many people only celebrate big successes like money, fame, or glamour. To me, real heroism is living the life you were given with passion, courage, and integrity, even if you are never noticed by the crowd.
I really like how you term your sons gifts as those "the world celebrates" - what a great reminder to see the everyday heroes around us and to rethink what we term 'success' for ourselves and those around us.
I'll be on the look-out for those unsung heroes. I agree, they have a quiet assuredness of who they are and it's without the slightest hint of affectation, which wins me over time and again.
Those that can still be kind to themselves, while disregarding the callous nature of this world, typically have good and extraordinary qualities that are worthy of admiration.
Cheers to Tom!
