I’ve had a lot of interviews. Sometimes I wish to have the kind of old world Japanese life where you went to work for one corporation until you died, but that’s not the way it’s worked out. Here’s what I’ve learned so far. Confidence is Key Sometimes it’s hard to remember amid the tension of an interview but the reason you’re there is that the employer NEEDS you. Without you, the employee, there is no revenue. Sure, you may not be the one who gets the job, but without confidence you’re almost sure not to. Do Your Homework Back in the day, one might have had to step foot into an actual library to learn about a prospective employer. Now all you need to do is Google. Use your searching skillz to learn as much about the company, the industry, and the individual who’s doing the interviewing. Perfect Your Pitch Think about what you want to get across. Put together a networking style 30-second elevator pitch. Have this ready for the dreaded, Tell me a little about yourself. Practice with a friend who’ll give you honest feedback (and who you’re comfortable acting dorky in front of – because that’s how you’ll feel practicing this!). And if you’re asked one of the Top Ten Worst Interview Questions, run screaming for the door!

I am a relatively recent college grad and I’m already sick of the interview process and am overwhelmed by the idea of still having a lifetime of it ahead of me. I agree, sometimes I think it would just be easier to get a job and stick with it until they throw the first shovel full of dirt on my coffin. I have trouble lying, but I feel like that’s essentially all interviews are, at least for me at the moment since I have little actual work experience to fall back on. At first, I had a lot of trouble with that concept, but now I realize it’s the only way I can get a job. I feel like I just need to lie my ass off. It’s so disheartening and sometimes I feel like I’m just not cut out for it.
