Do you wish you could give up sugar and just can't?

Last week I had a session with a client who was really struggling with her "need" for sugar. I've been there myself many times—as have many of my clients. She gave me permission to share with you the realizations she had during and after our session, in the form of an email she sent today:

"Dear Sharon...Two things: Thank you for the Consultation, as in the amount of time we spent talking, I did hear several important things you said to me. The last thing you left with me, was "to find a non-sugar-sugar, something that is sweet that is not edible." You asked me to see if that was satisfying.

You asked me to provide you with some feedback and first...As soon as you said about the non sugar- sugar , tears welled up in my eyes...correlates to sadness I am feeling about certain aspects of my life. I then left the house and went to the park for a walk and i smelled the flowers, the trees and the air, to help me get that sweet feeling. In the evening, I did not have sugar chocolate, or ice cream or cookies, I ate some grapes.

I do hope I can join your group in the next several months.
Thank you soooooo much!!

I notice that when I crave sugar what I am often really looking for is comfort, something sweet in the middle of a bitter day...or hour...or moment. A couple of years ago when I began the process of transforming my relationship with my body, I became aware that I was depriving myself of so much of the sweetness of life — other than sugar. When I started giving myself other kinds of sweet, I found I didn't need the sugar so much anymore.

Where is the sweetness in your life? I'd like to challenge you to give yourself other experiences of sweet and see how that impacts your need for sugar.

I hope you'll share if this works...or doesn't work...for you.

As you know, we just got back from two weeks in Sicily, and I was delighted to see that I had not gained any weight in spite of having some of that wonderful Italian ice cream every day. Must be all the steep hills we climbed that kept the pounds off.

Sharon, great idea. Would you mind sharing any of the other sweetnesses you found. Is non-sugary frozen yogurt with mangoes one of them? :)

Hey Robert,
Really I meant non-edible sweets, although that Big Chill Chillberry does do it for me. Let's see, what's sweet for me...snuggles from either of my children. the smell of vanilla or almonds or citrus, my meditative nature walks, almost any poem by Hafiz, writing, coaching, making art, etc. When I give myself these treats, I'm not so interested in chocolate or ice cream...

How about you?

It's sweeter than sugar and so much healthier. Whenever I need a fix, a spoonful of agave does the trick.

Also, some stevia sprinkled on low-fat cottage cheese is delicious.
