I did not grow up exercising. Now that I have kept a steady part of my daily routine it is a habit I can't live without. My body craves that time when it is all about motion. I feel sluggish when I don't DO SOMETHING!
I have a quote framed that says - "If you don't take care of your body, where will you live?" It always gets me to get up and move and reminds me to never take my body for granted.
Once you get your metabolism going it wants to keep going. It takes about 2 weeks to get over an old habit and another month to implement a new one. So think of it this way are you willing to give yourself two months to make a go of it?
You are right, Laura Lynn. You gotta get a rhythm started. Once you are at the gym, you're gonna work out. The key is getting there. Of course, humans are clever. We invent a million ways to prevent ourselves from doing the stuff that's good for us. Like not scheduling enough time to go to the gym. What works for me is to schedule an hour in my calendar two mornings a week when I attend a workout class that I love. This little extra discipline is all it takes to make me get to the gym routinely. And now that I have it scheduled, I really look forward to it, too. Just like you!
is key! I have all my clients do put all they intend to do for the next week into their calendar, if they keep one, from exercise to mediation to when they will cook, etc.
When you see it and set the time aside you are far more likely to do it.
For those folks who are challenged by getting to the gym I suggest finding a exercise buddy. I have one client who has made the intention to do my Boot Camp every week. I, however, am not motivation enough so she has engaged a friend and they have made a true commitment to each other to be accountable for coming to the class.
The thing to know about yourself is what will make the commitment stick? What is your true motivator? Not a false one like "I need to lose weight." If anything that can have a negative tone to it. When I first meet a client we do a session where I just coach them to find their true motivations and that which they value more than anything else. Those then become the turn on switch when the flame starts to die.
