The difference between occasional winners and champions is that occasional winners have talent; champions have talent AND heart. When an occasional winner hits the wall, the wheels come off; when a champion hits the wall, he/she reaches inside to his/her heart and pulls out extra determination. Champions are always pushing themselves to reach beyond their ability, because when they succeed they realize anything is possible and when they don't they get the opportunity to see how strong they are.

If you see adversity as your best chance to become smarter and stronger, then all challenges become opportunities instead of road blocks. To read more on this check out my Fast Company article, "Take the Hit" at: http://www.fastcompany.com/resources/leadership/goulston/090106.html.

Too much adversity is a sign that one is one the wrong track/path? Some would say so while others would say that one should move to the beat of their very own drummer until the cows come home. If something is obviously not working out, do you push through, dust yourself off and try it again or do you wake up and smell the coffee already??

Sorry for all the hackneyed phrases...

Amanda, thanks for your absolutely correct clarification that you taking the hit doesn't mean staying in an abusive situation, where you should cut your losses. This raises a good question: how do you tell the difference between a difficult situation where you should learn to "take the hit" and be stronger and one in which you are best to get out?
