Stopped In Your Tracks

Have you ever felt stopped in your tracks, derailed, or at a crossroads? I've been there, literally and figuatively.

The figurative tracks were the deep questions I had been asking myself about my life and career path for several months. I did not feel I was following my heart, but I had invested so much of my heart, time, and money in the path I was on, how could I justify to myself, and my family, changing my direction?

The literal tracks, were the ones that my train, the Amtrack Texas Eagle were riding on the day before Thanksgiving, 2003. I was in my sleeping car on the last leg of my journey home after spending the weekend in Texas at a retreat. It was just after breakfast and I was sitting journaling and pondering with heavy heart how to move forward. I as actually arguing with myself about what to do. My heart said it's done, my logical brain was telling me I could work at it a little longer. After all, what was another year to see if this was right.

A moment later and I felt a lurch forward and I rocked forward on my bed. At the same time I looked out my window and saw things in the air flying past my window.

Oh my God, we hit something! When we had come to a full stop I went to the door of the train and on either side of the tracks lay what was left of an 18 wheel coal truck. The driver was alive and sitting in what was left of the cab of his truck.

That day was a blessing. Though shaken, we were okay.

The truck driver did not appear to be badly injured. One passenger on our train asked to leave for medical attention for a possible neck injury.

It was clear to me that that any hesitation about following my heart was over and done with. But for the grace of God go I, and everyone else on that train.

Whenever I forget the gift I was given that day, I have the pictures of our train, and that truck to remind me. They are quite a site.

My renewal that year came on the Amtrak Texas Eagle.

What moments have changed your life? I'd love to hear about it.

Nellie,

What great insite! Isn't it amazing the events in our life that bring about clarity?

It's wonderful that you allowed this moment to bring things into focus and help you release thought patterns that were holding you back.

I think I'll spend some time today reflecting on those moments in my life that nudged me forward on my journey.

Teri,

Thanks! Any doubts I had in my heart were gone when I saw what was left of that truck. Our conductor said that we were very lucky, if there is such a thing when a train hits an 18 wheel coal truck. I feel like we had a flock of angels with us. We were told that had we hit the truck in any other place it could have been much worse. As it was we were told that we hit it right where the cab and the trailer join and that allowed it come come apart with the least damage to all involved.

It was further a miracle because the day before the train was over two hours late getting into Austin so I went over to Starbucks to get a chai and on the counter there sat a plastic bucket of little pewter guardian angels. I bought one for 50 cents and put it in my pocket. I still had it in the pocket of my jeans that next morning when were going through Missouri and hit the truck.

It does give you pause to consider life changing moments like this. I've had a few, caring for my mother in law in the last two years of her life, being homeless for a short time with my four year old. They are all moments when the Universe says, so what is really important. . .
