If you are not religious, thats okay - pick a night and EVERY WEEK keep that night as the night. It does not matter if you have tickets to the World Series - or it is a busy day - or.... any excuse you can think of - this night, like my Sabbath is the most important night of the week. Show your family that you can work or be crazy 6 days a week but at least this one night - not only are you all together, there are no distractions - it is family time.

Every Friday night I have dinner with my girlfriend, some friends and or family. Sometimes it is the two of us, but more then not it is usually 10-12 of us. It is a lot of work to cook for that many every week - but it is worth it. We keep the Sabbath which means no phone, no email, no blackberry - NOTHING. When people come into our home there is nothing more important then what is going on at the table.

It's a great practice. Shabbat can be particularly great when it includes singing. And I also find that if it involves outside time, with nature, it's very powerful. It's amazing how in this day and age of so many distractions and technologies, life's best moments still come down to people, food, stories, singing and dancing.

Fantastic Idea JNS! One thing I have noticed with clients is how much they rush around and grab food and eat it at odd times and in odd places. Connections with family and friends seem more disjointed than ever before. A great way to create more connection and nourishment in your relationships is to share meals regularily. Sharing the same foods creates bonds both tangible and intangible as you create blood chemistry with what you put in your mouth. You might want to share the cooking duties by making it fun for others to come and cook with you or make some Fridays pot luck.
