Another NFL star is accused of wrongdoing this week. New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss allegedly struck a woman and was himself slapped with a restraining order. It seems like a week doesn’t pass without a professional athlete garnering headlines for supposed misconduct. Fortunately, there are shining stars that are good, old-fashioned role models. Personally, I am relieved to see that I can find inspiring characters in a sport that creates more jaded fans every season. For example:

1. LaDainian Tomlinson: This San Diego Chargers running back is one of the most admirable in the NFL today. I have seen corners knock him out of bounds while simultaneously running their mouths. LT doesn’t strike back and calmly hands the referee the ball.

2. Donovan McNabb: I’ve said it before – he never lost his cool when Terrell Owens called him out. In addition, his never-say-die perseverance to play through injuries and adversity is remarkable! His days may be numbered as the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, but you won’t hear him pitching a fit!

3. David Garrard: After overcoming serious health issues, the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback came from the shadows of being a back-up to leading his team to the playoffs. Not only does he appear to have a genuinely good time playing, he interviews like an authentically nice guy.

4. Warrick Dunn: This Atlanta Falcons running back’s foundation focuses on assisting single-parent households. At 5’9”, his tenacity and determination on the field are nothing to pass up either.

5. Bryant Young: This recently retired defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers is known for his solid work ethic. After fourteen highly-productive seasons with the team, he left an inspiring legacy. (I was fortunate enough to actually be present at his final home game!)

Here I mention only a select few of the men who are part of what’s RIGHT with the NFL! There are others like John Lynch, Peyton Manning, Wade Phillips, and many more that I am neglecting to cover here.

Apryl,

You are dead on and thank you for pointing out the good guys in the NFL. Too often we are all to quick to talk about and spread the bad things that are going on in professional sports. Keep up the good work!!

By the way, Warrick Dunn is truly a class act. He actually pays the down payments on houses for single mothers and furnishes them. Last count I saw he has done this for over 40 different families. Some people write checks, other guys actually live what they say, and Dunn is a class act all the way.

I much prefer to focus on the good in sports! There are many more examples of good guys in the NFL, MLB, NBA, Golf, etc. Maybe we can start a trend!
