About eight months ago my husband Brian and I faced the dilemma of what to do for our 20th anniversary. We began planning a trip to northern Spain and began talking about the how we wanted to celebrate our actual anniversary day. The more we researched, the more elaborate the plans became. One night as we were beginning to hone the details of our trip we had a little argument. And it was in that moment that we both knew something was off about this plan. So we talked it out and what came out was we both felt confined and limited by our plans. We both decided it was time for a bonafide adventure! So we scrapped the whole Spain plan and the next day rented a RV for two weeks. Our plans? To turn left out our driveway! We spent two weeks driving all around the Great Lakes. We never knew where we’d be from one day to the next and as a result we were always in the perfect place! On the day of our 20th anniversary we were in the Porcupine Mountains along Lake Superior in the upper peninsula of Michigan. We hiked about seven miles into an enchanted forest along a river that had incredible waterfalls and spectacular rock formations carved by the rushing waters. When we came to the end of the path it opened onto a breathtaking view of a deserted beach along Lake Superior. Above us an eagle soared and eventually perched on a dead tree. It was then and there Brian and I decided to renew our vows with the eagle as our witness. We had no prepared words or rehearsed speech for one another. It came straight from the heart and had more meaning than anything else we could have done. Every moment of this trip was perfect and taught us a very important lesson.
We learned if you are open to anything happening, whatever happens is perfect. When we were planning the elaborate trip to Spain we had almost every minute planned, even the dinner for our anniversary! On our RV adventure we wound up in a little roadside diner for our anniversary dinner where they sat us at a special table next to a fly swatter that hung on the wall. Word got around and soon the entire restaurant sang I Love You Truly to us as we ate over candlelight from a candle conjured up in the back room by the waitresses. And after dinner we had our picture taken by the taxidermed “nature scene” in the bar. Now if that wasn’t spontaneous perfection, I don’t know what is!
