Katherine Heigl: Sort of a Mormon

Glamour Magazine recently interviewed Grey’s Anatomy star and rising movie starlet, Katherine Heigl. Among other things, her Mormon faith came up. When asked if she were still a practicing Mormon, Heigl said (over her glass of wine) that while she doesn’t practice her religion to the extent she did as a child, she was very supportive of the Mormon church.

She went on to express gratitude for her upbringing stating that her faith influenced all her decisions. However, even though she described her childhood as wonderful and secure, she’s not sure about raising any children of her own in the faith. I wonder if it wasn’t her parents, more than her faith, that made her early years so wonderful.

Faith is a wonderful framework in which to raise kids. No matter your religion, there are rules. The world is so connected now that as parents we have a lot of choice about our kids’ religious training. Faith is important, and often more significant to one parent than the other. As adults we often stray, but then return to our roots when kids enter the picture. That’s where it can get confusing.

How did you decide how to raise the kids?

Interesting - when I saw her in the movie "Knocked Up" I sure never suspected she was LDS. I lost count of how many times she dropped the F bomb!
