I know...weird question, and where could this blog post possibly be going with that kind of title. Truth is, I'm not sure yet.

I just looked at the clock on my microwave and it read 10:45. Every so often, I remember the PSAs that used to appear on some TV channel I watched growing up in which a disembodied voice would ask in a manufactured tone, "Its 8pm. Do you know where your children are?"

I always thought that was about the most ridiculous question I could imagine coming from a television commercial. Two main reasons...

First, my parents were NEVER around when it came on the air. Since I certainly didn't have kids, who the heck was the commercial meant for? If my parents weren't watching TV with me at that time, its probably because I was watching something in which they had no interest. If my parents had no interest, I've got to believe most other parents were equally as absent from their TV room couches and not tuning in. So not only a ridiculous question, but really poor programming.

Second, even if parents WERE in front of the TV, what was the point? Responsible parents with at least semi-responsible kids didn't need the reminder, and irresponsible parents weren't suddenly going to care about their kids' whereabouts because a Mr. Rogers vocie-over wannabe was asking them this question. The whole thing just seemed pointless (and even when I was young, I couldn't stand things that were pointless).

What does any of this have to do with your mojo (the definition of which I'm not going to bother to share...you'll have to watch an Austin Powers movie) or PeopleJam, you may ask? It actually just occurred to me...

If you DO know where your mojo is, my question should have no impact on you. You'll subconsciously answer, "yes," and then you would move on to the next inspired thought. That would be good. It would mean you're feeling in charge of your life.

The trick, though, is that if you do NOT know where your mojo is, my question (or its equivalent) could startle you into insecurity. There is no reason that has to happen. You STILL have to find your way to feeling in charge, i.e. you need for any answer to the mojo question to remain pointless.

With mojo, the harder you search for it, the longer it will take to find. So instead, if you're missing your mojo, have the courage to accept that its gone and that sometimes, stuff just happens. You can't explain it and you shouldn't try - one moment the mojo is there, the next, its gone on a walkabout. Don't read into it.

The solution is to embrace this mojo-less moment. As soon as you can sit with it, feel it, accept it and incorporate it as part of who you are, the mojo will start to build up again. Then the NEXT time you read a blog with this scintillating title, you'll be back to thinking the post is pointless.

Hi Matt,

There are "seeds of meaning" even in mojo-less moments. So, in addition to sitting with, feeling, accepting, and incorporating mojo-less moments as part of who we are, we also are ultimately responsible for discovering the deeper meaning of these moments for ourselves and our lives. We all have the opportunity to learn and grow from our "mojo-less" moments. Indeed, we would not know (and appreciate) what "mojo" IS without the existence of "mojo-LESS!"
