"Focus on your breathing," they all say. Man, hearing those words just used to drive me nuts!
I mean, I had the sincere desire to meditate but for some reason an itch here, a loud noise there, and I was completely done with the meditation. I really thought I was a lost cause.
"All the 'gurus' are doing it, so I should be doing it, too," have been my thoughts for years. "If they can do it, so can I..."but for me it really has not been that easy; until this weekend.
I attended a seminar on life success and reprogramming conditioned thoughts that have been ingrained in my since childhood. We started with a 17-minute relaxation cycle and holy cow! I couldn't believe it, I was successfully meditating.
The second day at the seminar brought more guided imagery and meditation and I saw myself designing my life as I truly desire to have it. I felt relaxed and eager to continue to bring this openness of spirit into my life. Instead of worrying if I was doing the meditation "right," I granted myself permission to be me, to just be, and to learn. It was validating enough knowing I was giving it my best go.
Have you ever noticed how we have that tendency to beat ourselves up and automatically assume we are doing something wrong? Where do you do this in your life? What are your negative assumptions.
My negative assumption was that I sucked at meditating.
I am on my 6th day of successful meditation and I've seen some amazing things happen as a result: I am eating better, I am more focused, I am more energized, and have more clarity of thought.
Lesson learned: If I think I suck at meditation, I do; If I think I am successful at it, I am. The power of thought, such an amazing thing!

I've always believed I'm far too "western" to go "eastern."
I tried meditating, with varying success. Gurus encourage you to "empty" your mind. What I want to know is: what if you're the kind of person who can't fill it up again? After living in LA for a year, I'm beginning to suspect this is a real danger.
I think a lot of people "meditate" whether they realize it or not. Some do it whilst sipping whine, watching the sunset. Some by listening and losing themselves to music (my personal fave). Some by painting. Some by playing piano. Some by taking an irrelevant stock and trebling it into a fortune. Some by praying. Some by cooking.
It's whatever gives you focus and grounds you. It need not involve a mat, candles, incense and a ylang ylang tree.
I so appreciate you Tara! Wow, you could not have given me a better response, and you are so right. You know, one of my favorite things to do is Salsa dance. When I am on the floor, it's as though time stops and my dance partner and I are the only people on the planet. The beat of the drums, the music, it all just takes me to another dimension. Yet, I had never thought of my dancing as meditation. From here on out, that's how I am going to view it and take the pressure off myself to meditate in the Bodi tree way!
I am in the Valley; we should have coffe some time!
Picking weeds is great. Also ironing and baking... or so I hear!
