So my wife is a HUGE Eddie Vedder fan...we're talking member of the Pearl Jam online fan club huge. I've always appreciated Pearl Jam and certainly like a whole bunch of their songs, but I don't quite approach the worship level (U2 is another story).
I had a deal with my wife - if Eddie were ever within 100 miles of LA, we would go see him. Even though he was JUST outside the perimeter, we got tickets and I went with my wife down to San Diego for the concert...in rush hour, mind you (people in CA know how much more magnanimous that makes the gesture). That might sound like an easy decision for any supportive husband, but the concert turned out to be on the very same night we launched the new version of PeopleJam! So I only had a few other priorities to consider (I ended up spending the whole car ride helping to QA the site...perfect way to set the pre-concert mood).
Anyway, I'm now on my way home and I've got to say that was the BEST concert EVER. The energy was incredible, truly palpable. Eddie is remarkable. He's an AESOME musician, a brilliant lyricist, and highly entertaining political pundit. My favorite line of the night - "the reason Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking funding away from education is because that's the last page in the Republican playbook...if they keep Americans stupid, Republicans have a chance to get back into the White House."
A seriously memorable night.
Probably because this was a big night for PeopleJam, I was more tuned in to why Eddie is such an inspirational dude. He's pursued his passion every day of his life. He's refused to compromise his principles or his vision. He's made it his mission to use his music and his platform to change the world in a positive way. He knows that the gift of being able to entertain and to touch people emotionally can have a powerful, far reaching impact.
So was it coincidence that the force behind Pearl Jam inspired me on such an important night for PeopleJam? Not a chance.

He's a great performer. One of the best concerts I've EVER seen is Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden a few years ago. The place was literally shaking the fans were so into it. Nothing like being part of a group that's having an incredibly good time.
I totally agree. I think Pearl Jam is a fantastic band. I haven’t seen them live since they were touring for the release of Riot Act, but I own (not downloaded) all their albums and even their “lesser albums” are only “lesser albums” with respect to their own albums. I forget where I read this but some article about Tom Waits said something to the effect that even Tom Waits’ worst album is better than any album you could ever put out. And I feel like that holds true for Pearl Jam as well. I respect Eddie Vedder and the rest of the band for standing by their strong values and strong political views all these years and for making equally strong music to go with it.
I had the chance to see them the night before they released their first single "Alive". They were working out there stage presence and there were a whopping 12 people in the bar! Needless to say an amazing show even back then. Eddie V is a cool guy, and he hung out after the show and was actually talking to us about things like the environment and the politics of. I think this was about 16 years ago now. they are a cool band and they do inspire people. Glad you had a good show!
I think you should have been working and not off fooling around, but that's just my opinion (and I'm not a huge fan of Pearl Jam).
Have you seen Into the Wild? It's a very good movie with a beautiful story. Eddie Vedder did the whole soundtrack (and was completely snubbed at the Oscars for best original song) and it added a lot the whole film.
I haven't seen Into The Wild yet...I've got it on my TiVo, though. Fired up to see it after going to that concert.
First of all---God or Buddha or the Universe or the Ents from "Lord of the Rings" (those are the magical talking trees for all that don't know)--ALL learned about Eddie Vedder in their "How to Be Spiritual, Beautiful and Inspire 101" handbook! So...Good for you Matt that you took a little swim in "lake Eddie" and came out a more soulful being. This planet would be a better place if everyone explored and honored that which moves them outside their day-to-day earthly form. So JASON---I really thought I liked you...but, maybe not so much.
Oh...and this was no "Peal Jam" night. I WILL be attending the PJ concert at Madison Square Garden in June, but it was Eddie--only Eddie. And it transcended space and time.
Ooops. Sorry Jason---I meant jns. Clearly--get your priorities straight.
