So the big game is coming and you want to impress your pals by having the best Super Bowl bash on the block? On Sunday, February 3, 2008 the underdog New York Giants are taking on the New England Patriots in Glendale, Arizona. There are plenty of ways to make this a remarkable event for sports nuts and naysayers alike. Here’s some tips on how to make your party legendary:
1. Cater it! Why cook? Hire a local company or order the goods in advance from the local grocery store. Make sure you have vegan/vegetarian options too. I suggest a hummus, falafel, and pita plate with veggies on the side. Guacamole, salsa, and cheese dips are always a hit with nearly every eater. Do something different and use blue corn chips and rice chips from the organic foods section instead of the same old processed potato chips. Wings, shrimp, and small ribs are great party nibblers also.
2. Serve lots of alcohol! Unless you aren’t a drinker, that is! Light flavored water, flavored iced teas like jasmine and green without the sugar are good alternatives to soda. If you must drink the carbonated stuff, at least go sugar free! If you can’t resist then there are some punch recipes out there that can be fun. If you are a drinker, do something more exotic than the usual domestics and grab some local micro-brew or imported lights like Beck’s, Heineken, Kirin, or Corona.
3. Make a game of it yourself! Ask everyone to dress in their best fan gear. Give door prizes and awards for best get-up and loudest trash-talking. Give everyone a “bingo” card that has spots like “underdog scores first” and “2 punts in first 4 minutes”. You can also put predicted scores for each quarter or use your imagination.
4. Have fun! Don’t stress out about making everything perfect. Most people are happy with some basic food, drink, and a good television to watch it on. Big screens and surround sound systems are the best, but work with what you’ve got! If you invite good friends, it should be a blast regardless. Oh, and leave those whiners that want to talk throughout the game at home. And if you are a whiner, don’t blow it for the rest of us who are truly interested. Go shopping, write in your diary or whatever but let the rest of us enjoy the game!
