Think golf is too pretentious? Not excited about chasing a little ball around? Think it’s too pricey? It took me some time, but I am quite the fan now! Yeah – I can even watch it on television! Seriously, there are so many reasons to get in the game!
No intense workout: for those of you who have athletic days that have long passed – this is your sport! If you recall, up until athletes like Tiger Woods came along the sport was nearly dominated by older, not so in-shape guys! Look on a golf course – there are more beer bellies than a sports bar!
Beginner beware: do yourself a favor and get some lessons. Forget about your buddy showing you how to swing and giving advice. For about $200 you can get a package of 5-6 lessons that will get you started. Most driving ranges have PGA/LPGA certified instructors that are a quality choice. Trust me – this makes all the difference in your game!
Fun in the sun: you get to be outside in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world! You are with a group of pals, walking or bumper-carting around the course having a laugh! You can even make a date out of it with someone you want to get to know! Nothing tells you more about a person than how they behave on a golf course!
Stress relief: during a difficult period in my life, I imagined that the ball was someone’s little head getting crushed into the air! This sport forces you to concentrate and pay attention to form. Just you and the ball…take a deep breath…
Money saving ideas: if you are just starting out, get a few used clubs to learn with. I used a hybrid club, 6 iron, and 3 wood to learn with until I was fitted and ready to spend on a nice set of clubs. All of my learner clubs were purchased from the used bin at Roger Dunn or Golfsmith and Ebay and none were over $30.
One for the ladies: OK girls – if you are having a hard time convincing yourself to play just remember one important fact – you get to buy new clothes! (Now there is something to be passionate about!) And you don’t have to be cutesy either – check out Tattoo Golf’s apparel.
