When I got my job at a TV production company, I was very very happy and excited. I worked long hours and poured my energy into the job. And then, over time, my enthusiasm went down. Then things got crazy, shows got cancelled, and we worked on a lot of creative pitches that went nowhere. My bosses were tense. Budgets were tight. And it was obvious that there was no career growth at a small production company.

I started to get restless and began to look around for a new job. But when a contact introduced me to a new company in a totally different field, fashion, I got cold feet. They were ready to hire me, but I was hesitant. Was I ready? Could I do the job? How would I cope with starting over? Was I sacrificing career momentum? I was torn by these feelings and I nearly lost the new opportunity because I hesitated so long.

But then I spoke to a friend who put things bluntly into perspective. The old TV business is in decline, she said. The new job would open me up to new skills and a new career path. Plus my current job wasn't satisfying and it wasn't going anywhere. Bottom line, my friend said, I was in a career rut and it was making me a bore!

I did it. I quit the TV job, took the fashion job and I have never looked back. It's a new me. I am so grateful for the friend who took me aside to share her wisdom with me.

I am full of gratitude and thanks to my dear friend who had the grace to encourage me and even push me towards an opportunity that I was afraid to grasp. Sometimes when you are on the brink of a big change, you need a little push. In my case, I needed a shove!

It's our dearest friends who will have our backs when we don't know where we're going. I'm grateful to my best friend, Max, who I can always count on for an acute, unbiased perspective on things.

Cheers to smart friends!
