You won’t find many business books or articles on the subject of emotions in business and the inevitable rollercoaster ride that goes along with being or becoming an entrepreneur. You’ll find every resource available to help you start, grow, market, and sustain your business from a nuts & bolts perspective; However, very few resources exist that give full dedication to dealing with the high highs and the low lows we experience as an early-stage, start-up entrepreneur.

Here’s what the emotional rollercoaster can look like:

High Day: You are feeling like you’re floating – you’re totally “in-flow” and all the stars are aligning. Conversations you are having are clear, concise, and things are just happening. These are the days when you feel it in your heart & soul that you were put on this planet to do this work.

Low Day: Negativity is seeping in, you are starting to doubt yourself and why you even considered this work in the first place. Your inner critic is speaking very loudly saying things like: “What are you thinking? Are you nuts to think you can actually do this? Do you really think that you are made out for this entrepreneur stuff? , Insert your internal critic voice here _____”

Here are some tips for dealing w/the inevitable ebbs & flows:
Remind yourself of your motivation - you know in your core what your motivation was for starting this venture and going after your dreams & define your true motivation.

Focused Vision & Action – knowing where you want to go is half the battle – staying focused on the steps you need to take towards your larger goal is the other half. Do the things you don't feel like doing, they are most likely the things that will propel you forward.

Use “failure” as an opportunity: When a door closes and disappointment happens, use this as an opportunity to ask yourself what you learned from it, how you can do things differently next time, and what door has opened as a result of this opportunity going away?
Pay Attention to WHO is running your business – oftentimes when we get caught up in the fear of the unknown we realize that our five-year old wounded selves are calling the shots – and causing us to fear certain outcomes. Remind yourself that you’re a capable adult with the capability to get this done and succeed and that things are in good hands.

Remember, moving forward in spite of your fears is scary, especially when we feel we’ve lost our footing and aren’t sure what we’re headed for. But remember, we all face fear, and you’ve faced it in the past and overcome it, and succeeded at other things. – and this is what separates the girls from the women and the boys from the men - taking smart actions in spite of that fear to breakthrough to your goals and extraordinary life.

Great tips Brenda! I find that those highs and lows (for me at least) come from seeking approval, and sometimes permission, to do what I want to do. If our conviction is strong enough, the highs and lows are manageable. (oh, and that inner five year old definitely comes out whining sometimes!)

Hey Robert,
Permission is a big one isn't it? And that is so true about feeling like we need it when we want to really step into our power and light. But as one of my favorite experts, Debbie Ford, says - Feelings are for feeling not for action. Even when we don't feel like doing something, do it anyways - that will make all the difference. So here's to managing the fears of our small selves and doing it anyways!
