Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Tedy Bruschi, and Junior Seau are just a few of the New England Patriots that nearly every NFL fan recognizes. This team did not get into the enviable position of a 16-0 regular season with just four players though. Head coach Bill Belichick seems to have a knack for picking out talent and has established a rather deep roster for the team. Here are a few of those hard-working guys that you may not hear about as often (unless you’re in the New England area or a dedicated follower):
1. Donté Stallworth: A six year NFL veteran, this wide receiver signed with the Pats in March of 2007 as an unrestricted free agent. In his first game with the team, he maximized his only reception for 19 yards in the win against the rival New York Jets. A consistent performer in every game, he delivered a 53-yard reception in the playoff win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
2. Wes Welker: Also acquired in March 2007, this wide receiver became only the 4th Patriot to turn in a 90+ reception season (ended with 112). In addition, this was his first 1000-yard performance in his career.
3. Jabar Gaffney: Yet another wide receiver, 2007 was his second season with the team. This sixth year man put out a 112-yard game in the victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 9.
4. Laurence Maroney: Drafted by the Patriots in the first round last year, this running back rushed for 79 yards in the comeback win against the Baltimore Ravens. In fact, he led the team in rushing yards nine times during the season.
5. Vince Wilfork: A consistent performer with the team in all four years of his NFL career, Vince was a key player in the win over Pittsburgh, sacking QB Ben Roethlisberger. At the beginning of the season, this defensive lineman recovered a fumble from San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers.
And the roster goes even deeper and beyond players – I haven’t even covered the coaching staff! It’s easy to see how this squad has been so triumphant this year. Apparently, Belichick has enforced the concept of collaboration as each member seems to humbly and willingly realize that there is no “I” in team.
