If you don't talk like a salesperson,

The secret to avoiding this is daring to care about what really hurts the other person more than making a sale. A way to do this is to ask these questions which will only work if they come from your heart:
"Are you okay?"
"How okay are you?"
"Could you stand to be more okay?"
"What would need to happen for you be more okay?"
Then do everything you can to help them feel better.
