When making the effort to leave work early so you can spend time with your kids, don't simply show up, spend time together and call it a success. “CONNECT THE DOTS” by taking time to let your child know you came home early for one reason only...THEM! This will go a very long way. In fact, don't be surprised when your child brags about you to their friends & teachers at school. :)
Children need to feel like they are special. By taking the extra time to point out WHY you came home early from work, attended their ball game or even their school play you are making them feel important. You are helping to ensure they understand just how much you love them. Don't get me wrong, simply doing these things for your child is fantastic...but explaining why you do them so they feel special is even better! ~ Have fun!
Beautiful tip. I would also add that taking an interest in your children's passions can make a big impact.
A lesson I learned early on in parenting -- being there physically with my daughter didn't necessarily mean really being "present" with her. I would find myself distracted by the events and stress of my workday, or worrying about things that needed to get done. I wasn't really fully with her even though I was physically present. So my ability to really listen, be spontaneous and playful and talk meaningfully with her was severely limited. But when I decided to do something to nourish myself and take care of myself physically, emotionally and/or spiritually before being with her, I found my experience with her much more gratifying and fun. Here are two things I tried that worked really well: playing the piano for a few minutes and creating beautiful nourishing music, talking about what I was feeling with someone on the way home to get clear from upsets from the day. It can be different for different people, and as a coach I love working with my clients to find what is nourishing and pleasurable for them. Bottom line is that I am nourished I am more available to others and that feels really good!
