I must admit, the whole collecting concept eluded me at first. I don't collect stamps, plates, spoons, Beanie Babies, or action figures- with the exception of my Sigmund Freud action figure (complete with cigar) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider figure I used to have posed in hand to hand combat on the desk in my old psychotherapy office. So much for penis envy.
Then, I thought about it. There are certain things I'd love to collect, but don't. For instance, I'm a sucker for Swatch Watches (I avoid their shops altogether), anything cashmere (not as successful as avoiding), and classic film DVD's. DVD's are a small luxury item I can afford. To me, a classic film is equivalent to a classic piece of literature (although many films adapted from classic books aren't so good).
My most recent fixation is acquiring all of my favorite Hitchcock films. Thus far, I've procured "Marnie," "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (Jimmy Stewart/Doris Day version), "Dial M for Murder," "To Catch a Thief," "Rear Window," and "Rebecca."
In order to complete my wish list, I want to find inexpensive copies of "Vertigo," "The Birds," "Psycho," "Rope," "The Trouble with Harry," "North by Northwest," "Notorious," and "Spellbound." *
After I get my fill of Hitchcock, it's on to Tennessee Williams, Ava Gardner, Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant...
I will feel pleased, experience a sense of completion, and never have to go out on a Saturday night ever again.
