Often when we think about changing jobs or careers, we start with job postings, CareerBuilder or newspaper job listings, even Craigslist–however there is a better way!

Before jumping into a new job–take the time to conduct a different kind of research. Starting with what we enjoy doing, what gives us energy, our natural skills–and then exploring where we can use those skills. We get to mold our jobs to fit how we live our lives instead of contorting ourselves to make an position "fit."

The research can be fun–look at companies you like; check out LinkedIN.com for inspiration; daydream about something you would love to be paid to do!

It starts with an idea and can grow into reality. Don’t worry about making it happen at first–enjoy the discovery, have fun and see where it takes you!

Conducting research removes the pressure of jumping into action. Rather than jumping into a new job that sooner or later recreates the same situation you are leaving - This time gives you a fresh vantage point from which to design and manage your career.

By bringing the fun into the process you will recognize more of the possibilities and see more of the opportunities around you.

You are lucky to have such a wise mentor! Knowing what we value provides us with a baseline from which to make decisions...without it our emotions, fear, anger, even excitement or joy can fog our judgment.

Since some people may not know what truly brings them joy, my wonderful mentor helped me define my values and now when I am doing this or that, I check in with a list of values I keep on a piece of paper and ask myself, does this fit?

I believe this is a good way to do things in a mindful way while still having fun!
