I'm a moderator on a feng shui forum where I field questions from a lot of new students. Today, one person wanted to know if the remedies she is figuring out for her own house will work completely. She wants a guarantee. First of all, the influence of feng shui in our lives is about 20-30% so there are definitely things happening to us and around us that we have no control over. The beauty of feng shui is that you can improve your circumstances, be it financial, health or relationship issues. But no ethical feng shui teacher or school or consultant will guarantee results 100% of the time. No great surgeon will either. There are just some things that are beyond our complete control.
If someone has been struggling with fertility issues for years and then they do a feng shui remedy that coincides with them getting pregnant shortly thereafter, that can certainly look like a 100% cure. Or if a person has been single for a long time and they do a feng shui remedy that brings a romantic partner into their life quickly, that too can seem like a 100% cure. But what about income? If you install a remedy for prosperity and your income goes up 10% or 50% that is wonderful. But who is to say that is enough? A person's expectations can effect how much they think something has worked for them completely.

Hi, Kartar:
I agree with what you've said here.

As a Chinese, there's a old saying regarding 5 key components to determine one's whole life:
1. Fate 2. Fortune 3. Feng-Shui 4. Education 5. Karma
(as in Chinese-- 一命,二運,三风水,四读書,五積陰德。)

1. First of all, FATE: Which family you were born into will determine who you are for the first 10 or 20 years in your life (or, for the rest of your life--for some people...). And that's also a crucial component you can hardly change.

2. FORTUNE: Someone just has better luck than you. That's not something you can work on it.

So... feel desperate right now? Seems like there's nothing you can change to improve your miserable life? No. That's why the ancient Chinese developed the whole Feng-Shui theory to better your life by changing you living enviornment.

3. FENG-SHUI: By alterning the living environemnt, one's life can be improved more or less. But, not 100% guarantee, as Kartar said here. However, it will definitely work on your psyche to make you feel better after you either clean your house, reorganize the clutter, move the furniture around or change the colors.

4. EDUCATION. That's the most powerful and effective way to improve one's life as I may say here. By acquiring the knowledge you need, or gaining the degree you need to step into the career you want, getting a proper or higher education (or simply by reading more books and maganizes, or watching more "inspiring" or "knowledgeable" TV programs) is absolutely a way to improve yourself.

The next one, and the last key component, might be a little bit odd for non-Buddhists, but, it makes sense to many people.

5. KARMA. Here, we mean to accumulate "good" karma to improve one's life. And those karma will affect your descendants, or you're affected by your ancestors.

What goes around comes around. As long as you keep the faith on human beings, always try to treat someone nice, say nice things and keep the nice & positive thoughts in yourself, your life will definitely turn better after a while.

A good example might be: the classic movie "It's a wonderful life".

Great response Wen-Chi. It's simple, it's logical, it makes sense. The five determining factors: fate, fortune, feng-shui, education, and karma are interdependent. If your fate is that you have had an unfortunate birth, one of hardship and poverty, then it follows that your access to education and opportunities will be significantly diminished, which in turn would affect how you relate to your environment and to the people/objects within that space. Karma, which is defined as your thoughts, words, and actions, is what you do with the hand that you're dealt in your quest for peace and harmony.

Thank you for your comment Wen Chi. It is true that destiny, education, and karma are a BIG part of how we end up in life. But I just wanted to comment on your description of feng shui. It reallyt is a lot more than organizing one's space and how our psyche repsonds consciously to a space. In fact, one thing I really enjoy as a practitioner, is seeing how feng shui affects people who have no idea how they are being influenced. I have tons of case study experience where feng shui remedies were installed without a spouse's knowledge or without a child's knowledge and they very much got the benefit. I am sure you know this, but I want other readers of the article and your comments to know that feng shui transcends the mundane, it is beyond "common sense" or the normal things that people think are just good design, planning, architecture. Just yesterday I had a client who's entrance indicated that the occupant could have problems with their breasts. This was totally non-obvious and has nothing to do with organizing one's space. It was based on when the house was built, its magnetic compass alignment and the location of the entrance in the floor plan. At first the client denied having any problems with her breasts. But at the very end of the consultation, it all registered and she told me that her 20 year old daughter (who lives there also) has a mysterious discharge from her breasts that is being looked into.... I am routinely amazed at how much we are in fact affected by our feng shui--not matter who are parents are, our education or spiritual practices. People seem to succumb to the feng shui influences of their home or work space to some degree or another--no matter what else they are doing in their life.
