The only way that I stay with any type of exercise program is if I enjoy the particular type of exercise involved. Adding that into the fact that I get bored pretty easily with any one type of exercise (except for salsa, which is not considered "exercise" in my book but rather "pure pleasure"), my latest exercise program has been a smorgasbord of various types of activity.
I want to add biking into the mix because it'll bring back the feeling of being a kid and being active because it's fun, not because you "should" or "have to lose weight." Which brings me to my next goal "Start a real exercise program, not just think about and plan one." But we'll save that for another day, another goal. Hold your horses Brooke Betts. Rome wasn't built in a day.
My first step is to get out there and research bikes. I'm not planning to be a Lancita Armstrong, so any ole' bike from Target or even Toys R Us will do. (Even though I get completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of advertising/ promoting that goes on in the Toys R Us toy packaging. "Play Spiderman Monopoly, Dora The Explora Chutes & Ladders and Simpson Sorry!" Whatever happened to good ole' Operation or Clue?)
Step number two is to get out there and go (i.e. riiiiiide like the wind). I need to incorporate into my schedule time to "ride" so I'll actually do it. Set up a schedule, maybe even "every Sun at 5:00 pm.
Oh and let's not forget a helmet! Safety first.

Let's do it. We can go to Venice on the weekends and be bike-divas on the boardwalk;)
Yes please Amanda, let's definitely do it. It's on "the list". It's funny because about a month ago I was taking a walk in Venice/ Santa Monica (in the bike path accidentally) and someone rode by and said snidely, "Nice night for a walk on the bike path" :0) So now I'll be a legit bike path user. Take that snide biker!
I have a bike, a beach cruiser actually, and I have named her the Purple Princess Peddler. She is purple with a white basket and when I ride, I feel like a 10 year old and I love every minute of it. I don't own a mountain bike because that equals "work" in my brain, and "work is not fun."
I take her on all my errands and also on some nightly tours. It never feels like exercise while I'm riding, but the next day, my body assures me that it was. I don't like to schedule rides but when I think about my errands, I think of how many places I can get to on the bike. So if this sounds like something you'd enjoy don't forget a basket, a backpack and a lock!
Ride On Sista!

My grandmother had a saying when she moved to this country. She said, "We can't afford to be cheap." What she meant was she could not buy the cheap products because if they broke (which they always do), then they would not have enough money to buy a new one.
I bought a really cheap bike once, and man does it hurt in every way. The seat is a rock, the brakes don't work well, the gears get nasty. If you really want to go far and have fun, find a used bike with a real brand name. I recommend Specialized.
Beth - That's so funny, I named my bikes growing up too! There was The Green Machine, The Banana Boat, The Expensive Bike That Got Stolen in College, etc. It all started with the Big Wheel. While other little girls were playing comfortably in their houses with their dolls and plastic kitchens, my friends and I were terrorizing the streets of The Meadows in our big wheels. We OWNED the streets.
I love the P to the 3rd degree name (Purple Princess Peddler) too. Your story just reminds me to have fun with my Not-Yet-Named-But-Will-Be-Soon Bike as I take her on "Night tours" and "Spins". Thanks!
Richman- Great advice! That's an EXCELLENT point and I am definitely going to heed your words. You're absolutely right, or maybe I should say Grandma Richman was absolutely right. Grandma always knows best.
Hi Brooke. I'm inspired by the step by step method you've chosen to realize your goal. "First things first" was a hard pill for a go for broke dreamer like me to swallow and keep down, though when I am able to employ it, it makes all the difference in my results and my sanity!
Thanks for the inspiration!

What a way to escape the daily grind – go get the bike and have some fun.
I have been biking for several years and it was the best thing I could do for myself – I wasn’t a speedster or into racing and adventure, just a mellow bike ride around the park, through town and on the trails of the old railways – I wouldn’t go for the exercise –although you’re going to get some just by peddling. I went for the time away from the daily stresses, the time to be by myself, the time to ride next to my wife - The time to reflect and to remind myself “life is good”.
But I’m guilty - This past year I failed to allow myself that time as I let work take over and I think it’s time to pull the bike off the rack and remember why I went biking in the first place…I better hurry – I live in a climate that’s not to friendly to bikers for several months out of the year..
Let us know how it goes for you - you’re going to love biking again.
I will too.
