Dr. Brett Saks, a working class healer, is a doctor on a mission. With his new book Bio-Logikal, he takes medicine and the human body to a new level of understanding.

The conception of the book was the easy part, says Saks. It was the actual writing process that seemed daunting, he recounts in retrospect. “I sat down to write a book many times…the writing was tough.” Dr. Saks is comfortable speaking in front of an audience or to an individual in his office seeking his consultation, but to translate his experience and wisdom on to a blank page in his own, special voice was a different story.

Dr. Saks recently participated “At the Table,” a weekly teleconference sponsored by Writers of the Round Table Inc., a forum where writers from every imaginable genre share insights and offer perspectives on their careers. Participants have the opportunity to hear insider information from successful writers, producers, editors, and agents and get a chance to ask questions about writing, publishing, tips to getting ahead, and finding creative inspiration.

Right off the top Saks explained that he didn’t want a self-help book that was cold and condescending, but a book that was like a friend-in-hand, one that would help the reader with a personal approach like the one they can find in his office.

He found the mentor and co-writer to help him create that book and find that voice in Sue Publicover of Writers of the Round Table. Together, along with Corey Blake, President of WOTRT, they embarked on the journey otherwise known as Bio Logikal.

Logikal Tip #1:

Create a team. Writing is a process and creating a book is best done when you can draw on more than just your own expertise. With Sue Publicover, Professional Division Director for The Table, Dr. Saks found his match. Sue’s 20-year literary background and Saks’ medical history were the perfect marriage for this work. The key to their partnership was that, in a series of interviews, Sue asked the questions that arise every day in Saks’ practice. She forced him to dig deeply for the answers that his patients and clients seek.

Logikal Tip #2

Trust the process and enjoy the journey. The first draft of the book was a tough crank as everyone involved had to learn the subject matter, but when Sue and Corey finally understood Dr. Saks methods of healing, the first draft came together like magic. Then it was on to draft two, turning it into a gem of a book. “The book went from good to great,” says Dr. Saks with pride, willing to admit that he was tempted to stop at draft one. But the dream team he found in Sue and Corey was the support that he needed to press onward through drafts.

Logikal Tip #3

Saks concluded at the end of the class “If you think you want to write a book, do it! Pour your heart out don’t let anything stand in your way. Achieve your goals, and find help doing so.” This kind of focus is the very fabric of Dr. Saks’ personality, a Doctor for the people and one with illuminating energy. That is why he is the body’s “fix it” man.

The “Bio-Logikal” Mind of Dr. Saks

“You can’t fix something if you don’t know how it works,” says Saks. Those were the wise words of his father, and they inspired him deeply.

Reared in a family of auto mechanics, you’d think that Dr. Saks might follow in the footsteps of his lineage. This man who came from blue-collar workers did find his niche in helping others, but obviously not by fixing their cars. He is on a lifelong mission to understand the human body…and how to fix it. Dr. Saks modestly considers himself the ‘blue collar doctor’ and goes by the motto “Knowledge is power.” The drive for this knowledge is the fire that fuels him day in and day out.

His passion for natural medicine encouraged him to write Bio- Logikal. Instead of learning how to readjust a combustible engine, Dr. Saks became a chiropractor and learned how to readjust the body. He is an expert in natural medicine, and with that expertise, has applied his dad’s “how it works” technique to aid others in fixing something more precious than a car — the human condition.

Many doctors of conventional medicine treat their patients from the same perspective: if the pharmaceutical companies say that this works for this ailment and it has helped others, then everyone should take it. Not so, says Dr. Saks. He feels that all people are unique individuals with different needs, and that is how he approaches his practice. He questions why an individual is hurting and how can the body be fixed naturally as all humans are unique expressions of nature.

Saks wanted a book written without the mechanics involved, which is why he searched for a writer without a similar technical background, one who would be willing to experiment with his methods and correctly translate the complexities of the human body to a layperson. That’s exactly what Sue and Writers of the Round Table accomplished.
