For years I have kept a box full of mementos on the top shelf of my closet. I like knowing it’s there and occasionally I even find a reason to rummage through it. There are nametags from jobs I never liked, ticket stubs, and too many going away cards to mention (I’m a mobile girl.)

The problem is that the year are starting to pile up on me, and even though I’m no packrat, the memorabilia has outgrown its box. And the memories are growing every day. I’m not sure just how many boxes I can commit to.

It’s important to remember that all those things are just that. They represent the memory, but they themselves are not the memory. To be honest, I’ve got things in my boxes standing in for magic moments I’ve already forgotten.

Slowly, one box at a time, I’m going to sort through my mementos. I’ll hold onto anything of material or historical value, toss a few things, and write about the rest. By capturing the feelings associated with all those scraps of paper I think I can let them go in peace. Because frankly, I’d rather have the space for other things – like shoes.
