1. The Mitchell Report: As one of the biggest blows to Major League Baseball in its history, the Mitchell Report revealed players that used performance-enhancing drugs. Also one of the most controversial events in baseball, fans remain divided about the implications of the findings. Perhaps the most surprising revelation was that New York Yankees pitching star Roger Clemens was named as a user. Although this report will likely overshadow the 2008 MLB season, I am not quite ready to give up on this sport. I would advise everyone to keep an open mind as surely the balance will be restored – there is too much money at stake for it not to be.
2. The death of Sean Taylor: Gunned down in the prime of his life, Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was murdered in a home invasion attempt. To add to the tragedy, the four who stand accused in his death are all twenty years old or younger.
3. The NBA referee scandal: Now all of that screaming we have done aimed at the television has actually come to fruition – the game was fixed. A revolting example of human greed! Thanks Tim Donaghy, you’ve given the conspiracy theorists fuel for many years.
4. Michael Vick’s legal troubles: In addition to being arrested for his involvement with a dog-fighting group, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick lied about it and later tested positive for marijuana. All this and people are still clamoring to give him a second chance? I can think of some talented people that are still waiting for their first chance. The hubris exhibited by this one-time NFL star is an absolute disgrace. Enough said!
5: The overzealous wrestling father: In a clear case of phallic insecurity, an Aurora, Illinois father pushed an opponent off of his 11-year-old son during a wrestling match.
I'm so tired of hearing about Michael Vick. The public outrage is bs. It's shocking because he's a celebrity and because animal cruelty is cruel...but humans have been cruel to animals for ages, aint nothing new, aint acceptable.
Take something as common as greyhound racing, for instance, which subjects dogs to institutionalized, state sanctioned animal abuse. Think those dogs like running around the track like idiots for the amusement of some some fat trailer-park bozo who can hardly afford to spend their social security and pension checks betting on something as depressing and useless as dog racing? We still hunt animals for sport. We've made games out of killing and hurting animals for ages...so why the big uproar about Michael Vick?!
His hubris?
Show me a celebrity with no hubris and I'll show you a failing career.
Yes, while plenty of celebrities have hubris and people are cruel to animals there is additional disappointment here. Not only did he allegedly engage in animal cruelty, he lied, did drugs, and acted in an overall aloof manner at what he was charged with. It was a low point in sports for the year!
"He lied, did drugs, and acted in an aloof manner..."
Who didn't lie in 2007? The pope? Who hasn't done or experimented with drugs at some point? Who doesn't have a hard time facing the music when the going gets rough.
He's human. We do stupid things sometimes and worse things have happened in sports.
I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished for his actions. I'm saying that there's worse shit happening in the world and Michael Vick is just another blot and if you're going to put his name up there, why not do better, and put the names of all the other blots that made it a more shameful 2007?
I appreciate your comments! It's empowering to know that my short commentary inspires so much effort and emotion from someone that is tired of the subject!
It doesn't take much effort or emotion to respond to hypocrites who pass judgement easier than they pass gas. Both scenarios stink!
I'm tired of hearing about Michael Vick but I never tire of calling people out on their bullshit. I'll do it again, watch how easy it is...
"Thank you...I appreciate your comments!" --That my dear is bullshit. You're far from thankful and you're exhibiting the classic tell-tale signs that I'm getting under your skin...
and I'm not even trying....
You said, "...All this and people are still clamoring to give him a second chance?" Anyone who takes second chances away from another should lose all their chances in life. Those that are still waiting for their first chance, need to stop waiting and make that first chance for themselves.
Did you like this one too or should I come again?
Hey Apryl,
Quick question. In response to the NBA ref scandal, what ever happened on this story it was buried quicker than when Cheney shot his pal in the face?
I thought this was actually the low moment of the year and one of the lowest in sports history.
Don't worry Her007 Vick will be back playing for the Raiders in 2009! They love second chances.
Hi Apryl,
Just wanted to say how much I admire your poise in the face of confrontation and provocation- not that's there's anything wrong with either. I love that you're not taking the bait. I know how hard it is for me not to bite on it.
Unflappable and unflinching, rising above. Very nice.
TJP
Yeah Jason, I totally agree - where did the story go? It's interesting how certain things get swept under the carpet!
