I read somewhere that it’s no accident there doesn’t seem to be a lot of sports in the month of February. With Valentine’s Day right in the middle, those of us who are a bit rabid as fans have to take a break to dote on our significant others. Well, some of us do – I am married to a guy who is just as passionate about sports as I am. Yes, you heard that right. I am not going to pine for some romantic dinner and chocolates that I won’t eat. For this Valentine’s Day and the month of February, I will be taking in sports! I think the person that made the observation that this month somehow lacked significant sports only followed the NFL and MLB without realizing they have important milestones this month too. There are plenty of excellent sports to watch, follow, and fall in love with in February, such as:
1. Golf, golf, golf! The season really gets going for this sport in February. This year, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Accenture World Golf Championship are in February. While the Pro-Am includes a more light-hearted tournament, the World event invites the planet’s top pros to compete.
2. The obvious to kick off the month – the Super Bowl. The first February Super Bowl was only a few years ago in 2002. The New England Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams 20-17. The following year the game was back in January on the 26th. Since then, each championship has been played on the first Sunday in February.
3. Winter X and Winter Olympics – February catches the tail end of the Winter X Games and every 4 years we are treated to the Winter Olympics.
4. NBA All Star Game – This year the events take place from February 15-18. And don’t forget plenty of regular season games throughout the month.
5. Action sports – snowboarding events from Volcom, Burton, and more for example. This is also an excellent time to check out skateboarding, BMX, and other events. Not up on your action sports? Fall in love by watching on Fuel, a channel dedicated to the genre or find a new passion on EXPN online (part of ESPN.com).
And don’t forget the NHL season in full swing! Professional tennis also has events throughout the month for both men and women. Pitchers and catchers also report to MLB Spring Training soon and exhibition games start in the last few days of the month. There is a boatload of boxing events as well. Trust me; February is far from lacking sporting events.
And coming next month…March Madness!! Talk about falling in love!
