Especially during the finals, there are some great NBA baskets that look impossible but manage to make it in! Every time I see a great play like that I fall in love with basketball all over again! Five of the most exciting buzzer beaters I have seen are:

1. Derek Fisher – 2004 NBA Playoffs – Touching the ball with only 0.4 seconds left the Los Angeles Lakers star makes the impossible shot to win the game. He promptly ran off the court into the locker room. When later asked why, he claimed he didn't want to stand around and act like he was unsure about it for fear they would take the points off. Looking at the replay – he indeed made the shot! The San Antonio Spurs were shocked.

2. Robert Horry – 2002 Western Conference Finals – After Los Angeles Lakers stars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal both missed the layups, Vlade Divac swatted the ball to Horry and he made the impossible 3-pointer to win against the San Antonio Spurs.

3. John Stockton - 1997 Western Conference FinalsThis point guard for the Utah Jazz hit the three pointer as time expired in order to win the series from the Houston Rockets.

4. Nick Van Excel – 1995 NBA Playoffs - This Los Angeles Lakers guard hit the winning 3-point shot against the San Antonio Spurs with 0.5 seconds left on the clock. (I see a pattern!)

5. Michael Jordan – 1989 NBA Playoffs - How could I mention this category without mentioning The Shot? Perhaps his most famous basket, he took the inbounds ball and made it to the hoop with only 3 seconds and heavy coverage. His Chicago Bulls won over the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-100.

What would be your favorite college buzzer beater? I might have to go w/ Christian Laettner's last second shot against Kentucky. March madness is almost upon us!!!

I guess I would have to pick an oldie but goodie - back in 1995 when Tyus Edney beat the clock to put UCLA over Missouri in the last 4.7 seconds of the game. UCLA went on to be National Champs that year! I am counting the days until the Madness begins and will have a few posts this week to celebrate it!

What about Jerry West in the NBA finals against the Knicks when he took an inbounds pass and scored from almost full court to send the game into overtime?

Jerry West shot should not have counted. Dave DeBusschere of the Knicks made an 18 foot jumper with 3 seconds left to put the Knicks up by three in the 4th quarter. The Lakers with no time-outs left,Wilt Chamberlain made an in bound pass WITH one foot on the base line (the officials did not see it).
I heard this game "live" in 1970. The legendary Laker announcer Chick Hearn called West's shot an 80-foot "jumper", Chick did correct himself stating the shot was between 60-65 feet. Also stating that " I guess he (West) IS Mr. Clucth". The "shot" only sent the game into overtime which the Lakers lost.
Yes, I would rank this shot behind Fisher's and Horry's which produced Laker victorys.

Then-Washington Bullets shooting guard Jeff Malone hit an off-balance 3-pointer to beat the Detroit Pistons in a shot that was replayed by the NBA for years.

The younger generation, like you apparently, don't know about Larry Bird, Jerry West, Pistol Pete, Magic and more Jordan!

Fisher's shot is def. the greatest buzzer beater shot I have ever seen. I remember watching it live and being completely stunned when it happened

What about Lebrons in the 4th to win it in the playoffs

1993 Bulls/Suns Game 6..Paxton tossed a 3 pointer with a few seconds left..Phx didn't even guard him, thinking it wouldn't go in the cylinder..but it did! Phoenix blew their one and only chance since for an NBA title..Oh..The Barkley Years. Typical Phx Suns..tsk, tsk.
