Is there anyone, anywhere, who doesn't feel stressed out these days? Not likely.

We can't do anything about some causes of stress: illness, an unexpected job change, our in-laws, etc. There are, however, some causes of stress that are definitely within our control. Let's look at one: skipping meals.

Skipping meals leads to stress in these ways:

  1. Your brain uses glucose for its primary energy source, and when you skip a meal, your brain is running on empty. Without an optimum energy source, it's tough to keep your emotions on an even keel. Little annoyances turn into major problems if you don't eat a balanced meal or snack routinely throughout the day.
  2. Another problem with low blood glucose levels is the increased risk of developing a headache. A throbbing pain in your head doesn't help decrease your stress levels or improve your overall mood. Keep blood sugar levels under control by eating at regular times, and making sure your meals include a source of lean protein such as low-fat cheese, turkey or chicken, or legumes.
  3. Elizabeth Somer, MA, RD, in her book Food and Mood, recommends eating breakfast as a way to support your body's defense system, which comes under attack during times of stress. Stress causes a decrease in antibody production, which makes your immune system less effective. Eating a balanced breakfast is Somer's top recommendation to beat daily stress.
  4. People who skip meals tend to have lower energy levels throughout the day and have more difficulty losing weight. Why add another source of stress to your already stressful day? Make time for meals, keep your energy levels high, and lose your "I'm fat and I can't take it any more", stress-causing attitude.
