New York is a great walking city. While I lived there, I never rode the subway, not even once. If you don't have to leave Manhattan, there's really no need. Originally, I refrained from taking the subway because of the expense and the added health benefits. However, I would have completely missed the New York I saw on foot had I gone underground, scurrying as quickly as possible from point A to point B.
I discovered the most eclectic galleries, Java Girl (66th & 1st), Beanocchio's (75th & York), Gourmet Garage (64th & 1st), boutiques, tiny neighborhood parks, and best of all, motorists who actually observe pedestrian crosswalks (sadly, not true of the bike food delivery persons). Everything I could have possibly wanted was within a 15 block radius of my apartment.
The Bentley Hotel was only a block away and has a penthouse bar with incredible views of the 59th Street bridge, Manhattan, Queens, and LIC. I went there with a lackluster date to have an end of the evening drink about a month ago. The bar was already closed, but the lounge was still open. There was a small group of people gathered, drinking their own bottles of wine and beer. One of the guys was playing guitar.
The guitar player, Greg Wyard, knew every McCartney & Wings song. I've been a huge fan since the age of 3 (in the early 1970s, you listened to your parents' vinyl record albums). My date finally gave up around 1am and left me to my own devices (c-ya!). I spent the rest of the night/morning hanging with a group of Brits, listening to great music and laughing until we watched the sunrise over the East River...and then I moved to LA a week later.
Oftentimes, you have the most amazing experiences when you least expect it, if only you're willing to see what's just around the next corner. It was one of the most enjoyable evenings I've ever spent (after I ditched my date who I had no intention of ever seeing again) and definitely a great adventure.
I have never been to New york City but I have always wanted to go. I have been saving in the past few years for the trip. I wanted to have the most relaxing but exciting time while I am out there. I want to shop until my corns have corns in 4-inch stilettos with a smile of immense satisfaction. Full from the best pizza I hear is the bomb and have the room with the spectacular views. Hope I can experience it this upcoming spring.
Thanks for the comment, Amanda. I'm nostalgic for NYC and the East coast in general.
I miss the gritty, real attitude and quick wit. I miss the collective drive and energy. I miss thunderstorms, rain, and green. I miss pedestrians who DON'T wait for the walk signal to cross the street. I miss being only a 5.5-6 hour flight to London. I miss being in the same time zone as my friends and family. I miss the restaurants and the architecture and real, honest to goodness red BRICK buildings and sidewalks. I miss the greyness of the Atlantic. I miss locally harvested little neck clams.
I still haven't adjusted to writing and typing "Los Angeles" as my city of residence on forms. I always hesitate and think, "Oh god, I don't want people to think I actually live here." I suppose it's because in my mind, I don't and probably never will. LA's fine, if it's you're thing. I've decided to make the most out of it whilst I'm here, but don't anticipate acclimating fully. I'm just not wired for it and I swear to God if one more person calls me "dude..."
In an effort to be positive, let's see, what can I say that I like about LA? Hmm... at least it's not Florida!
Tara, you made me nostalgic for New York City. Each year, I try to visit 2x a year. I'll be lucky if i can squeeze in one, short trip this year. The best part about that city is that you never know what's just around the corner. Many, many long nights in that sleepless city. Maybe I start a club, "New Yorkers in L.A." Whaddayathink? It would be a private and exclusive club, of course. Red, velvet rope and all.
